Need camp help please. Went from 7 students to 2 students.
« on: January 10, 2017, 01:44:27 PM »
5 minutes into camp and I find out that there will only be 2 students instead of 7. Most of my activities were group activities, but now I can't really do them with only 2 students.

Some fun activities with only 2 grade 5 students would be much appreciated please. Three more days, and 3 ~ 4 hours of English each with only 2 students...

To be honest, I don't see the point in having the camp at all.

Sorry to hear about your situation. I agree that camp in this case should just be canceled. But it's doable.

Did any of your previous activities involve any materials? If so, what?

You can try playing board and card games with them, and teaching them some western favorites (like War, Go Fish, and Liar Liar). If you don't have access to these types of things, lots of members have provided printable boards and cards on this site.

You can use an activity where they watch a short film or clips and then have them write or talk about it using words or language that they've learned throughout the year. Have them describe which one they liked best and why.

You can have them make cake balls -- easy-peasy if you just give them one chocopie each, have them crush them up, then mix them with icing (you can make your own icing or find alternatives, like peanut butter or nutella). Form balls, roll them in cocoa or powdered sugar, and enjoy.

If you have access to them and don't mind spending a little money, you can bring in some foreign snacks and have the kids try them out and describe them, and then pick out the ones they liked the most, or have them rate them from worst to best (in this way, you can have a superlative/comparative kind of theme for the entire day and center a lot of activities around that -- like watching two short animations and then having them describe them using superlatives/comparatives). There are a ton of ppts and games on this site for superlatives and comparatives, too.

Maybe try some easy science projects, like paper bridges or rock candy.

Anything with crafts if you have access to some materials, like paper -- you can work together to make a paper mache house or something (just make your own glue out of flour or whatever).

You can have something superhero-themed, discuss super-powers, have them create their own superheros, maybe make their own comic book...

Someone on this thread provided materials for animal dioramas:

Apparently learning popular western hand gestures is successful.

3 - 4 hours is already awful for camp but with 2 students it becomes absolute torture.
*On vacation now and unable to send movie links!*
Half of the class should be a movie, search the internet and find some related worksheets they can do about the movie then it looks legit.
The rest of the time could be the modified materials you were going to do originally. Sorry, that's the best I've got. That's just way too much time to fill for 2 students.

Yeah, think of it as babysitting time rather than a super camp. There isn't much room for somethings with only 2 students. I had two last year, and we did Phase 10, Uno, Rummy, Rummikub, Checkers, a movie, possibly a movie a day, then a game. Also, I played the games with them, so that we at least had one more person.

Last summer for camp, I had one student for 2 hours haha, it was torture. Colouring pages, card games (I played with him), wordsearches, movies. There was nothing else for it. We literally watched 3 movies together that week  :lipsrsealed: Good luck!

I have a class with 5 students but usually 3 or 4 show up. Board games are good if you have any for that size class and you can play with them. We did Settlers of Catan (which I own) and the 6th grade students enjoyed.

Check out the pokemon card game notboringenglish posted on here. That is another game which worked well for my class.

Today only one student turned up and it is the one who doesn't speak at all(!) so we made habitat dioramas. I showed him a brief ppt of habitats and animals found in different habitats then gave a choice of making an ocean, desert or forest diorama. Gave him some pictures to colour etc. and left him to get on with it mostly. I played some English music during the class so it wasn't too quiet.

I saw that a while back, but my school's colour printer doesn't work. The staff also get a pained look each time I want to print something.

Movies, crafts, and games. There are lots of cool papercrafts and even some of the more complex ones can be done with such a small group of kids. Do you know any origami or can you learn? Once I had only one student show up to class and my coT told me not to do my regular lesson plan/materials so I just did origami for the full 40 minutes with her cause I had nothing else.

Some Crafts:

Paper snowflakes http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Make-6-Pointed-Paper-Snowflakes/ (my elem. kids liked it so much they made them the whole 40 minutes)

Polish stars http://www.instructables.com/id/Polish-Star-Ornaments/ (I used hot glue guns instead and only 10 circles a star but it depends on you & what's available. Def do a practice run if you need. I did this with middle schoolers and it took well over an hour. With elem. you may need to be more hands on though)

3D paper snowflakes http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-3D-Paper-Snowflake (took the whole 45 minute period with my middle schoolers)

Coffee painting (just need black instant coffee, cups, hot water, and paintbrushes or spoons, paper-- hopefully thicker width but w/e you can get) ~for dark, 2:1 parts coffee:water ... for light, 1:2 parts coffee:water. Adjust as needed

Papier mache (if you've got access to some newspaper... this could be done over the course of a few days as it dries and needs to be painted. You could also make pinatas and then fill them with candy and have the kids destroy them)

Themed posters?

Harry Potter wands (paper, hot glue, paint/some sort of coloring media) http://www.instructables.com/id/Make-an-awesome-Harry-Potter-wand-from-a-sheet-of-/

Games:

UNO, Twister, board games... battleship (with or w/o English)

Card games (slap jack, ERS, etc.)

JENGA (some elem. schools may actually have it, though not in its box) with easy English words and/or questions taped to the blocks

I regularly have classes with 2~3 students during the year but I've never done camp with fewer than 6 kids (4~ish hours a day, every day), and sometimes even that's tough so I can imagine the difficulty with only 2... yikes. You can make it work though. If I think of more, I'll post again
