Female only teaching positions
« on: February 09, 2017, 08:02:19 PM »
So lately a number of teaching positions have been adding female applicants only or female applicants preferred.

Seeing as a number of new teachers here are feminists and always say Korea is so sexist and unfriendly in general to women why is it that these job postings still exist? The people who take these jobs usually fit the sjw's persona.

How could any self respecting person (feminist) apply to a job that is sexist and unfair to men?

I have to agree. So many young western women don't like living in foreign cultures that don't share their native country's feminist ideology. So they seldom stay long and write the foreign country off as misogynist and stupid.

As for hiring preferences, every school has them.

I hope this doesn't turn into a, "it's so much harder to be a man in Korea" threads.

That would be Trumpian delusion levels.

Lately? Female preferred/only has been a thing here for over a decade. Probably longer.

I fail to follow your leap of logic that they are all feminists.
From my experience female teachers have a more positive view of Korea than males. In my city it's like 70/30 female to male and people are way less negative and bitter than they used to be.

Well, in terms of getting a good job (as a native English teacher), females have an advantage. Never in my life have I seen a university ad that said male preferred. Only the other way around.

Sehan University, which is located in Dangjin in the Midlands of the Republic of Korea and is about one hour from Sadang subway station in Seoul, is opening a position for a full-time instructor who will start working from the first day of March, 2017.
1. JOB POSITION
- Full-time (preferably female) instructor for classes related to English
2. QUALIFICATIONS
- Native English Speaker
- BA with a TESOL certificate and 4 years of teaching experience or
MA with a TESOL certificate and 2 years of teaching experience
3. REMUNERATION
- 2.3 million KRW
- Overtime pay: 20,000 KRW per class-hour
4. WORKING HOURS
- Minimum 23 class-hours per week
- Monday(9am) to Thursday(1pm)
5. BENEFITS
- Furnished housing on the University campus
- Medical Insurance & National Pension: 50% paid by employer
- 2 Months Paid Vacation (1 month-winter/1-summer)

I don't dispute that in our situation it's easier to be female in terms of finding work. I guess it's just all the other stuff that tips the scale.

I'd also imagine it's easier to get a job as a white male, compared to a non-white female. I could be wrong on that one.

My human rights have been trodden upon.

Bang ki moon- look into it please.

I'll take the hiv test no problem but please don't allow these sexist advertisements.

Funny you don't so often see the "Caucasian preferred" term anymore.

Though in "the Beijinger" website you do.

No need to take that kind of heat.

When you ask for a name, photo, demo lesson, etc. that issue solves itself.

Well the photo would probably reveal gender too.

Mind you there are a lot of feminine looking dudes out there.

It's because Korean bosses still think they can push around female employees more. 90% of the time those jobs are worthless because it's just going to be some small-handed ajusshi or angry ajumma harassing you constantly.

You'll generally find that political principles go out of the window when people are faced with choices that can improve their own economic circumstances. Most EFL teachers tend to spout left wing policies as a matter of course and accuse the Tories/republicans of being fascists, yet they're mostly quite content to suck at the teat of dictatorships around the world such as in the Middle East and places like Singapore. I imagine the feminist brigade are no different.

I heard many explanations. Ranging from teaching being seen as a "woman's job" to stories of university professors hitting on their female students.

The most probable explanation is simply that the parents prefer females.

Even parents of university students? They prefer their child / children be taught by a female? Seems like the most knowledgable / skilled / competent person should get the job, regardless of gender.

This.
Jobs that ask for female teachers are red flags that you wouldn't want in the first place anyway.  Either you'll have a small time Korean trump as a boss and all that entails, or a horrible adjumma who is just looking for someone that they can punch down upon from their own lowly place on the social ladder.

I tend to have zero sympathy for anyone who willingly takes that kind of job without doing any research.
The more you know.

Universities prefer female teachers. Universities are bad places to work?

EPIK has been hiring more women than men lately which is obviously a preference as more men than women apply. Does that automatically make public schools bad places to work? Hell no, it doesn't.

People are more comfortable with women as teachers because women are stereotyped as nurturing and kind, which are typically good qualities for a teacher.

If you don't like the high-level outcomes of gender stereotypes, work to challenge them in your everyday life. Be a nurturing and kind man.

Every school is different and "every situation is different", but I would say the ideal native speaking English teacher for many schools in Eastern Asia is the following. It would be a woman and she would be Caucasian, less than 30 years old, American or Canadian, and not overweight.

It depends on the qualifications if there are a 100 job openings and 500 people apply and the top 100 people are females then there is no problem. The problem is when one sex is preferred over the other.

If 500 people apply and the top 100 candidates are male but they discredit them and choose females then there is a problem.

Epic doesn't say women preferred but there motive can be figured out. 50/50 men and women isn't the answer either it should be quality based not sex based.
