Middle School club activity ideas??
« on: March 02, 2017, 03:06:46 PM »
Hi guys!  I have to do a club activity class this semester!  My co-teacher said that either a conversation or a writing club activity class would be good.  Since I'm better at teaching speaking I will mainly focus on that.  I will have 8 students.  Four of them will be second graders and and four of them will be third graders.  They are low level rural students.  I will be teaching by myself.  I'll be teaching from 3:30 to 4:50 one day a week.  I have some ideas, but please let me know if you have ideas that you think would work well for middle school students!  I always find club activity classes a challenge because it is an after school class and the students are tired.  Let me know if you have done things that have worked well for you!!

I've found middle school students like pop songs.  Teach them some english ones.  You can do fill in the blank, circle the correct word, etc.  Another option is making a music/dance video.

We've handled acitivities before when I worked as a part-time ESL teacher. We organized a mini-contest wherein they need to sing English songs as a group. They even performed with musical instruments. The students liked it so we had the contest every month for 3 months.
It's actually good to see their improvement.

Hey

This semester im doing a whole series of mr bean videos + plus activities (everything and anything i could find on waygook.org)
The last two activity days will be spent watching Mr Bean on holiday.

Bit of speaking, writing and listening + vocab building

Most of the lessons are about 40-50 mins long, so first half of the lesson includes
1. greetings, how is your week/end, anything relevant (midterm studying going?)
2. handing out flipfiles for worksheets (collect them at the end, kids forget these things),
3. warmup game (here are a few http://www.eslinsider.com/how-to-teach-english-videos/vocab-games)
4. Lead-in with question related to Mr Bean topic.
5. Go through PPT
6. Go through Worksheet + explain
7. Watch + worksheet answer
8. talk about movie
9. file worksheet + collect flipfiles
10. CHeers

I've been struggling a bit with after school lessons this term. Thought I'd repost these lessons from Erland on here since they really helped me out - well planned and with plenty of activities.

I've been using 'raz-kids' storybooks for my club activity.

It's got a lot of leveled books to choose from (I'm using level F for my 1st grade middle schoolers) and some supplementary worksheets.
I print out a book for each student and go through it on a tablet with them.

If you're in Jeollanam you can get the fee covered by the office of education for around 6 months (maybe a full year; still need to confirm).

The website can be a bit confusing (it's got other things, like a classroom management section along the lines of 'classdojo' and activities for the students to do at home) but the books and supplements themselves really do alleviate prep time.
