Howl's moving castle & Ponyo lesson
« on: May 03, 2011, 01:45:20 PM »
Hi, I looked at this week's 'Story time' lesson for my 5th and 6th grades and thought- wtf? really?
So I started the lesson by threatening the class that if they were bad, then they would have to do the text book things (noooo!/aneeee!). I first got them to do a few physical activities (arrange themselves in birthday order etc.) Then watched the first 8 or so minutes of each movie. For classes that are normally running riot while the home room teacher sits and does marking at the back they were silent! It was beautiful.
Ok, so here are the the work sheets I made:

That's awesome. I'm a new teacher and will be looking to incorporate some Ghibli into lessons. I showed the kids a picture of Totoro and they went crazy.

I tried the Ponyo lesson in my 6th grade and 4th grade class. 4th grade loved the movie and complained a lot about stopping it to do the worksheet ^_^ told them they could watch more if they finished, it was the most motivated I have ever seen them. I made a second worksheet (will post in a bit) and tried the same trick again today with the next part of the movie, but it didn't work as well. I think I may just show the rest of the movie in my afterschool class and then make them write reviews and stuff. Thanks for the great idea and worksheet! It's really good to have a movie which I can show in English with English subtitles and have even the low level students following along.

The 6th grade lesson flopped because of, of all things, loud anti-Japanese sentiment from some of the students. Sad to hear from such young kids.

Nice worksheet!  Great way to trick the kids into incorporating learning into the class, I think I will be using this very soon.

Could you, please, provide the links for the cartoons? I am not familiar with this anime so I am not sure what to look for.  ::)

Oh they are feature length ones, you should be able to watch a cheeky version online somewhere I'm sure, but I used the DVDs, sorry.

I'm new here, and would like to try out the Ponyo lesson plan for my kids, I am homeschooling them. I don't see the lesson plan that you posted...

Hi there!
I've made more than 5 posts, but I can only seem to download the file as an index.php file. Any advice? I am really looking forward to getting some ideas from these sheets!

Best wishes!

Hi all

I figured out how to download the file. You click save link as and then type over index.php and save it as the file name that you see in the link. I don't know how or why I thought to do that, but it was a on a whim and it worked!

Best!

This is such a great idea!  I have only been in Korea for a week and been involved in four days worth of classes so far, so getting some ideas for lesson plans is really helpful!  I feel very lucky--I can't think of a single class that I can't look forward too-- they're all so eager to learn!

What a brilliant way to introduce children to anime, and what beautiful films to use in doing so.
