Games/Songs for directions
« on: April 19, 2017, 04:37:19 PM »
I want to do a lesson with my extra classes on directions! I thought it would be fun to watch OkGo's video Upside Down & Inside Out because it is pretty fun and will get the kids talking. Since my focus is on speaking, I really want them to practice saying things like that, but also learn words related to direction. This would be for grades 3-6 (I have mixed classes).

So how about some songs or games to learn about directions?

Here is my target language (roughly, still in the process of editing things):

Inside out, Upside down, Down, Up, In, Right, Left, Front, Back, Side-to-side

I really want them to get active so maybe some kind of simon say's or treasure hunt kind of thing? Any suggestions would be helpful!

For teaching directions, I like to play Simon Says. Say 'put up your left arm', 'jump on your right leg', 'move forward', etc.

Another game that makes the kids go crazy is Pin the Tail on the Donkey. I have them work in pairs when playing. One student is blindfolded, and the other is the 'helper'. The helper gives directions to the blindfolded student so that they can place the pin in the correct spot. 'Up, down, left, right, forward, etc'.

I printed out a big donkey and made a little playing surface, but it's not necessary. You can easily just draw an 'X' anywhere on the chalkboard and give students a magnet to place on the board.

Good luck

Line dancing.

Then give volunteers to shout the instructions.

Also, look at the elementary thread. There are songs and games there you can adjust.
