This lesson (the 3rd lesson for my second grade high school students) follows on from the second lesson "Hope for Japan", but it works well as a standalone lesson too.  The topic for today is 'Charity'.  At first I was worried about how this would go down with the learners, but it was very well received. 


Basic lesson plan:
Greet students and chat for a few minutes about news in their lives. (We chat like this every week).   
Introduce the slang of the day.  Today the slang in B.O. (Body Odour).  The students receive hints and clues and have to guess what B.O. stands for.  The best answer - Barack Obama. 

The lesson.  I chose not to introduce the topic at the beginning of the lesson and went straight to the first slide.  All the slides have ONLY the logos and names of the respective charities.  After seeing a logo the students guess the FULL  name, once they have managed to do that you can explain what the charity is about.  We even ended up playing charades at some point to get them to guess the correct answers.  After the last charity logo, ask them what all those logos represent, and move on to the next part of the lesson.
There is a GREAT website called www.freerice.com .  It is a site that supports the World Food Programme.  (Select English Vocab as the subject and have the teams compete against each other to see how much rice they are able to donate).
Wrap it up with a quick recap of what charity is and why it is important, and don't forget to thank them for the charity that THEY had done.

I have an open class coming up and I was struggling for ideas.  I think this will work really well.  I'll try and build some learning points into it and I think the teachers and the students will really enjoy it.

Very cool.  With that in mind, I'd really like to use this with my HS classes soon!  Thank you all for the inspiring materials on this topic.

Question though: how do teams compete?  I only have my one computer.  Do you just use the same login info and the teams keep track of how much rice (out of the whole class total) they donated?  I love that the game adjusts the difficulty level based on correct or incorrect answers, so this could be an appropriate "game" for all three proficiency levels I teach, and I can start out with a higher level for my more advanced classes.  Getting really excited about this!

I was initially confused about the Mother Teresa quotation and the name/picture of Helen Keller immediately following it, but after I actually played the slide show it made much more sense, haha.  Very nice animation sequence.

I'm thinking of building a lesson plan on the topic of social entrepreneurship. The students would be able to construct their understanding of entrepreneurship through a socially responsible lens.  They would form groups and eventually create a venture of their own. There are lots of agency initiatives that the kids could compete in too: e.g. http://www.ysec.org/links/  and http://canada.ashoka.org/youth-venture-0
