High School Charity Lessons
« on: May 04, 2011, 08:06:49 am »
This lesson (the 3rd lesson for my second grade high school students) follows on from the second lesson "Hope for Japan", but it works well as a standalone lesson too.  The topic for today is 'Charity'.  At first I was worried about how this would go down with the learners, but it was very well received.

Basic lesson plan:
Greet students and chat for a few minutes about news in their lives. (We chat like this every week).
Introduce the slang of the day.  Today the slang in B.O. (Body Odour).  The students receive hints and clues and have to guess what B.O. stands for.  The best answer - Barack Obama.

The lesson.  I chose not to introduce the topic at the beginning of the lesson and went straight to the first slide.  All the slides have ONLY the logos and names of the respective charities.  After seeing a logo the students guess the FULL  name, once they have managed to do that you can explain what the charity is about.  We even ended up playing charades at some point to get them to guess the correct answers.  After the last charity logo, ask them what all those logos represent, and move on to the next part of the lesson.
There is a GREAT website called www.freerice.com .  It is a site that supports the World Food Programme.  (Select English Vocab as the subject and have the teams compete against each other to see how much rice they are able to donate).
Wrap it up with a quick recap of what charity is and why it is important, and don't forget to thank them for the charity that THEY had done.

Here's a lesson I put together.

Show the video, ask the questions and go through the slides. The worksheet is their action plan for a charitable organisation. At the end, get them to present.

Let me know how it goes if you use it.

Cheers.

Hi,

I have an open class coming up and I was struggling for ideas.  I think this will work really well.  I'll try and build some learning points into it and I think the teachers and the students will really enjoy it.

Thanks so much for putting this up here! The powerpoint is nice too, nice colours :D

Lesson plan and ppt are attached. The students thought the name "Magic" was absolutely hilarious and laughing ensued for about 3 minutes, so you might want to adjust based on your students' personalities. The students also really enjoyed finding the "money" under their seats and deciding what to do with it.

Sadly, I'm something of a skeptic when it comes to sites like freerice.com.  But happily, I was proved wrong about it being a hoax, at least according to the hoax-busting website Snopes.com!  ...Wow, that sounded like a late night infomercial or something, haha.  Anyway, here's the link to the write-up on Snopes: http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/charity/freerice.asp

Very cool.  With that in mind, I'd really like to use this with my HS classes soon!  Thank you all for the inspiring materials on this topic.

Question though: how do teams compete?  I only have my one computer.  Do you just use the same login info and the teams keep track of how much rice (out of the whole class total) they donated?  I love that the game adjusts the difficulty level based on correct or incorrect answers, so this could be an appropriate "game" for all three proficiency levels I teach, and I can start out with a higher level for my more advanced classes.  Getting really excited about this!

I was initially confused about the Mother Teresa quotation and the name/picture of Helen Keller immediately following it, but after I actually played the slide show it made much more sense, haha.  Very nice animation sequence.

I made a worksheet (since I like to have them for students with alternate learning styles), and it goes with the PPT posted by alhobward.  In spite of liking worksheets, I do try to be somewhat green, so I fit 2 worksheets on each page.  Requires cutting before use. :)

Edit: the first (and only, so far) class I have taught this lesson to was one of my highest level ones.  They were able to guess nearly 2/3 of the level 60 vocab words.  Impressive!!  It helped when I pronounced the words for them, but you can do what works for your classes.

I'm thinking of building a lesson plan on the topic of social entrepreneurship. The students would be able to construct their understanding of entrepreneurship through a socially responsible lens.  They would form groups and eventually create a venture of their own. There are lots of agency initiatives that the kids could compete in too: e.g. http://www.ysec.org/links/  and http://canada.ashoka.org/youth-venture-0

My students have a lesson on charity in their textbook, but it's oh so dry and boring. This topic has the potential for inspiration and passion, and I've been looking for a way to capitalize on it. Thanks for the ideas!

Here are 5 linked lesson plans. In lesson 1, I adapted an activity from another waygook member.

My stuff is mostly built upon stuff I gathered of waygook so I'm going to give some of it back...

I had to make something out of three weeks of a 'charity' theme.  I work at a vocational high school so my main goal is to try and get them to interact with me and speak some English, so this is not very grammar or vocabulary focused.

Lesson: Charities making a difference
Focus on 'one can make a difference' (power of one video), explanation of "give a sh**" (and shaming for swearing), identify the various charity organizations

Lesson: Philanthropists
Take notes on 16 philanthropists (don't have this spreadsheet, easy to make), play Guess-Who by making the students wear backwards necklaces and asking each other for clues ("pictures of philanthropists" file), Students go to freerice.com
