Well something Korea may be doing right in the public schools. Lots of male teachers compared to USA at least. But quantity doesn't always mean quality.

AHHHHH! Great tip thanks!

I don't think I will pursue a teaching job back home, but I have noticed the lack of male teachers. I had one in my K-6 experience and that was unusual.

This is causing some problems for me lately. Some female teachers seem to think I'm 'scary' to the students (I never actually act scary or even angry, and the students never act scared) because I'm big, male, and foreign. Ironic, considering the exact co-teachers who think that way are literally the angriest, scariest, screamiest co-teachers I've worked with.

Reasons like this and other assumptions people make about male teachers (specifically those teaching elementary students) are why I don't know if I'll teach elementary in the US. I would prefer it to high school, but it's one of the few fields where being male doesn't work as an advantage (aside from maybe getting in the door).

Yeah the teachers here seem to think we are all criminals, sometimes. But I've also had co-T's be a bit envious with how the students will engage and interact with me/my lessons. Part of it is just being a foreigner though for sure.

Teaching kids properly requires patience, planning, and really good classroom management.  Kids are kids.  They have short attention spans, high energy, but are also generally innocent.  (bad behaviour is something they learn from their parents, especially the really young ones)  In my experience, teaching adults requires less classroom management, and was wayyyyyyyy less exhausting.  I think elementary can be the most challenging age to teach if you don't bring your A-game every day and PATIENCE.  Like I said, kids are kids - so there's gonna be noise, crying, snot, whatever.  Kids are still learning proper social skills and also what their boundaries are.

I personally prefer older students, but kids can be rewarding in their own right.  As someone who is getting a K-12 esl license back in America (and working on a Master's in Teaching) I'm keeping the option open for elementary because there's always a demand for men in primary.

He may well be my brother from another mother, but I don't have much tolerance for licensed teachers who can't speak grammatically correct English.

It's painful and harmful:

"The people at the front was finished..."

"Imagine if you really was doing something."

"Eye-high"moment (it's known as an aha! moment)

"change their whole perceptual"

"You don't never take lateral"

"Mind frame"

"They dirty"

"More nice"

Ugh!!! Those poor kids.

Lemme ax you a kestion...

% wise, Most of the male co-teachers I've worked with have been more grounded and less psychotic than the female co-teachers.

Particularly towards female NETS, the married Korean male co-teachers tend to be the best.

I think we have a guest Korean poster. Welcome and thank you for your helpful insight.

No argument about his choice of grammar. I think it is intentional to speak the way he does rather than it being a reflection of his overall intelligence.

I hear you.

Unfortunately, first impressions being what they are, when people speak English poorly, many will draw the conclusion that they are, in fact, intellectually challenged.

That said, as a teacher, we should be modeling appropriate behavior and language to the students in our care.

Using substandard English is an injustice and will serve to further disadvantage those children in the future.

Said it before and I'll say it again, what consenting adults do behind closed doors shouldn't concern you!

"I'm going to Korea to teach English and bed a lot of Koreans."

Okay, so what? This bothers you? Sex is bad?

It takes two to tango.  Unless someone is being Bill Cosby-ed into something, I think its fair game.

Exactly. Even if I went to a country with the sole purpose of seducing their women, throw the teaching aside, why not, it's still none of your concern.

This idea gets trotted out all the time and it's ridiculous.

"I like sex. I will go to Korea, flirt with women and have sex with them, hopefully."

HOLY SHIT, YOU HEAR THAT? HE LIKES SEX WITH WOMEN!

So what?

What if it was a guy who was going to Korea to hook up with another guy.

With the new anti-gay president.  Who knows what could happen...
