Must/Have to Signs Lesson
« on: June 07, 2017, 05:40:47 PM »
Hi everyone,

I recently learned that I would be switching from teaching middle school to university in 2 months, so I thought I would start the process of uploading my more successful lessons for the benefit of my fellow waygookins. I hope these lessons help you out!

This is a lesson I designed to help my students become more comfortable with using "must" and "have to". I used the textbook Middle School English 1 by 권오량 et al., but the lesson can be adapted to fit other textbooks or be taught as an independent lesson.

For the quiz game portion, divide your class into the number of teams that seems appropriate to you, and use a points system that is comfortable for you. In my classes, I often use the following system:
- If a team gets a question correct, it can bet 1, 5, or 10 points.
- One team member then plays rock, paper, scissors against me.
- If they win, they get 1, 5, or 10 points.
- If I win, they lose 1, 5, or 10 points.
If you have an all-boys middle school like me, they'll probably always bet 10 points...

At the end, I had students draw their own signs using "must" or "have to". Some just sped through it, while others drew really detailed signs.

Some of my favorites from my classes were:
"You have to watch out for moms in the PC room."
"You must watch out for murder."
"You have to watch out for goldfish."
