What are some things you happily overpaid for.
« on: July 08, 2017, 04:06:52 PM »
Proud owner of a 8000 won cantaloupe. Last trip home, I believe I bought one for $1.50.

Was curious about what the waygook community has happily over spent for?

I don't mind paying a premium for convenience or good service.
I don't like gouging or cartel pricing (most things in ROK fit this description.

Raspberries, cherries, dragon fruit, avocados, brussels sprouts, romaine, kale, alfalfa sprouts...

Some things one just "needs", regardless of price.

I read the question differently.

I do but most of those things, but am not happy to overpay.

8000 for a cantaloupe? That's not overpaying; you got hosed. I just bought one for less than half that price and still felt I was overpaying. 8000 won is my half-watermelon price. I'm never happy to overpay, and always seethe for a little while in situations where it's unavoidable. Although by not shopping online much, I probably regularly overpay without even realizing.

One thing I regularly, knowingly overpay for is coffee, which I'm 'happy' to do if it's made right and presented properly, but too often it fails to meet my expectations.

I hear you.

I am simply happy that those things above are now sold in Korea, as fruit and vegetable options used to be pretty bleek here.

It's still not great, but at least you can find two different varieties of onions, and two different varieties of potatoes, and if you are lucky you can find more than one variety of apple.

For the most part, however, Korea is a monoculture, through and through.

I don't get it, but people don't complain and farmers don't diversify.

When I was single I happily paid more than the average price for a hooker. At first I though she was just trying to screw me, but she was phenomenal.  ;D

They don't know what peaches and cream corn tastes like.

Kind of like canned vs fresh huckleberries.

Who the F' likes eating cow corn?

I genuinely like it; plain- no salt or butter. I don't know why because I am the only one I know who does.

Back home, for special occasions and gifts to loved ones;
In Korea, I've OVERPAID for things I've rarely found:

1. Today I spent 15,000 won for a bag of Brazil nuts because in fifteen years here I've never come across them before, and I loved them back home.

2. I've paid 40,000 won for a bottle of Bacardi 151 because its production has been discontinued and supplies are beginning to dwindle.

3. I buy those cups of ice at corner stores for pure convenience even though I could make ice at home and bring a container of ice with me when I go out.

4. Fruit and vegetables. I couldn't care less about the price when I'm buying fresh, healthy food. I've paid 10,000 won for strawberries out of season, 15,000 won for a tray of red raspberries and I recall more than that for some other fruit, though details are fuzzy because I really don't pay attention to fresh produce prices ON PRINCIPLE (I will not eat less of them based on price - there are other silly areas of my spending I ought to curb instead if anything).

Van,

Cheongyangi produce market has Brazil nuts.

8,000-10,000 for 500 grams.

Check it out.

Update:

Tonight at Homeplus, Mrs. put a 7990 cantaloupe in the cart.

"Really?"

"YES! I want it!"

...

Add "What makes Mrs. happy" to my list.

me, my wife and MIL went out for dinner

on the way back (in korean) i said,: hey look!! it's the watermelon truck guy! 5000 won a watermelon!! let's get one"

wife/MIL: no, 5000won watermelons are not delicious. let's go to a different place

(how foolish of me)

wife/MIL: let's buy this watermelon instead

me: but it's 18,000won (...?)

wife/MIL: yes, expensive watermelons are more delicious

me: ...

(later on)

wife: see, isn't this watermelon great

me: have you ever tried the 5000won watermelons?

wife: no of course not. these are more expensive. they are better

.....a conversation i'm not gonna win. anyone else experience shite like this?

Gladly overpayed for a bottle of Woodford Reserve. And a bottle of Tequila Rose (yeah call me a sissy, but that's one smooth drink), and Beefeater gin. Laderach chocolates were a nice one. Williamson Early Grey. And Corn Nuts. Corn Nuts.

Who the F' likes eating cow corn?

I'm guessing its something in the texture or the "heartiness" of it. There's plenty of sweet corn in various mayonnaised salads, pizza, and other amalgamations. (Does "mayonnaised refer to just the salads in this sentence or both the salads and the pizza? You decide!)

My epilator. It came to well over $150. I was in love with it until my luggage got left behind in Hong Kong. My epilator was in it and had a dead battery. 2 days later I got my luggage back but my epilator was on and buzzing like crazy inside my case.

That is CANNED corn :(

You aren't suggesting that canned corn equates to fresh Jubilee on the cob?

I buy canadian and American steak and feel hosed when I buy it as its so expensive but still 50 percent cheaper than korean beef.

Also good socks are well worth the extra cash

Buy the 5000 won watermelon bring it home and feed it to her. Ask her if it's delicious and then pull up a picture of you on your phone holding the watermelon in front of the 5000 won truck in mid purchase. That'll teach her.
