Genki English in South Korean Public schools.
« on: May 06, 2011, 03:32:18 PM »
When I first arrived in Korea, like many of you I was simply told I'd be teaching elementary school english.  The next week I was in a classroom with 35 9/10 year olds and told to teach them.  I did a search on google and found genkienglish had 100's of ideas for teaching at elementary school.

If you don't know of the site then it is www.genkienglish.net

I have used genki english software in my elementary school classes and even for my summer and winter camps.  It's a great way to liven your class and even get your students enthusiastic about learning English.  The site has songs for almost every topic in elementary school.

I emailed the site and they were interested to know if you guys could say how you use genki english in your classes.  Also if there are any topics that were a bit stale and needed bringing to live with genki english.

This year, I'm in a High school so I can't contribute to new textbook ideas much.  I miss singing and dancing with the youngsters.  :)

I'm not in Korea yet but I've bookmarked it for future use. Thanks!

Can't say that i have personally, but hopefully other people were able to get some ideas and take advantage of another resource that is now available to them.

When I taught elementary I have referred to their website for some materials. Even in middle school I have used a song or two, I find it to be very useful for some things ~~

I teach High School here so haven't really used it. However, my son's (age 7) first language is not English and he loves the phonetics games where you have to match the sounds. Last year I also taught elementary one day a week and the kids also loved this game

I have used the Genki English songs and suggested games to replace some lessons from the textbook, where appropriate, or in other cases, as a quick extra to supplement an existing textbook lesson, for grades 3-6.

For grades 1 and 2, it's my main teaching material. I follow the provided lesson plans (on each song page) quite closely. I also use the board games and snakes and ladder games included on the website.

The songs that work best are the ones where the lines are repeated two times, so the kids listen then sing / repeat each line along with the CD / software. The songs without this format (such as "What's your favourite.." for example) are sometimes more difficult to follow.

I love Genki English, and have used it in class, and the K teachers were very impressed. But when they tried to purchase it for the school, they weren't able to because it's not a Korean website, and don't have a Korean 'business code' or something like that. The same with barryfunenglish.com - they wanted to buy a subscrition, but it's not a Korean website ㅠㅠ anyone else heard about this excuse?

For my regular classes, I occasionally use games from Genki English to replace and/or supplement the games in the book.

I use Genki English heavily for my afterschool classes, especially my first and second grade (in elementary school) after school classes.  I actually bought the software.  Songs are really important in ESL.  Before I bought the software, I sometimes made up my own songs with powerpoints (time consuming) and sometimes went without songs.  Now, afterschool classes take much less work.  The computer games are also fun for the kids, and take no preparation.

I'm considering purchasing the software for my 1st and 2nd grade afterschool classes. Those classes have so far been really horrible and I found genki online, but I wasn't sure I wanted to pay so much for a program I may use only for a year. With that said, would you guys still recommend buying the software? There are tons of things online, but I'm seriously considering it, because searching for songs and coming up with topics weekly have become rather difficult :/

I posted a similar message about a month ago. My Korean co-teacher prohibited me too from buying the online pack due to the lack of a "Korean business code". Someone at that time posted a torrent link, but it appears that it is down.
I tried making a 3 day account with downloadweb.org, but for some reason they are not accepting my Korean international credit card.
Anyone know of any working links for their online pack? It seems each one I click on through google has been taken down.
I know it's stealing but really in this situation there is little alternative beside paying an exorbitant amount of money out of my own pocket for a semester's worth of material.
Thanks!

does anyone have a working link where I can download the songs only (besides the official page)?

Would be really useful for the 1st and 2nd graders that I have to teach (no curriculum given to me of course)

I already have the teachers guide......just no songs to accompany it ;)

Hello!

I was wondering if anyone had purchased Genki English and if so did they think it was worth it?  As well, how did you "level" the lessons?  for example how do you use the Genki English material but for grade 5 instead of 3/What was your process?

Thanks,
Nadine

Hi Nadine! I have been using Genki English since 2012 and I have never regretted it once! Once you purchase, you will be able to access the Daily Blog and VIP Forum! The GE community is very helpful, and you can even contact Richard(the creator) personally! The materials are great because they can be applied to all levels. Of course, 5th/6th graders will not respond to the singing and dancing as well as 1st-4th graders, but it is still possible to get them engaged! You have options as to how you can progress the levels. The traditional way is to follow the curriculum as it is laid out on the site (Adventure level>Brainy Level>Challenge level>etc) which I recommend if you have no book for class (usually 1st and 2nd graders). Another option is to use the songs and activities as supplemental materials to your books. This is rather simple as GE covers many of the same topics that you will find in elementary books in Korea. To make this easier, go to the curriculum page and Ctrl+F content you are looking for. Ex: Ctrl+F weather. The site has many games (printable and idea wise) that you can use to implement into your classes! This will keep things fresh and allow you flexibility depending on what your kids like. For example, my first school had 6th graders that loved anything besides reading aloud. However, my current 6th graders won't have the dancing :( So now I make bomb games with the content (which they are really into!) or do other games from the site (they love the hammer game!) that I have discovered they like. It really depends on your kids, but just go in with a positive and energetic attitude! If they don't like your activity then make sure you have a few back ups ;) I have also just posted in the VIP forum a workbook that I have made using GE as my base. This adds to the workbooks (aimed at elementary level kids) that Richard has already made and the worksheets available. The phonics program is also awesome! Definitely worth the money in my personal opinion ^^ Feel free to inbox me or ask questions!
