If it's a private message where you're basically just having a go at someone, if you're not prepared to say the same thing in public, you probably shouldn't be saying it at all.

Haven't seen any of that myself, but yeah, I wouldn't share private messages with others.

I don't know where you all grew up but where I come from that's bang out of order.

Fair enough the death threat random ones but normal messages? Very grassy, teachers pet sort of stuff.

let's have a show of hands. Would you post a PM to the public? I wouldn't dream of it.

I would do it. Especially when you're namecalling another user who isn't me in my inbox. Call that person out if you're mad at them, not a 3rd party. Have enough courage to argue with people you're actually upset with.

I get quite a few PMs. Unfortunately, a lot of them tend to be along the lines of:

Subject: Re: idiot
Off yourself thx

However, my favourite so far was actually a mod's PM:

You have received a warning for continuing to post off-topic on a board after receiving a warning post from a moderator. Further more, you did so in a manner as juvenile as my middle school students passing notes in class. Posting things like:

In this thread we have jjdavis the grass who posts public messages and piggydee who was bragging about the ignore function and that I was on it.

They are the master trolls. This **** jjdavis chirps up saying i've posted something twice so i send said **** a pm then said **** posts it publicly and pretends like i sent them a random message.

Laughable really.

More laughable that you've been on several threads complaining about it and created another one. Maybe teaching isn't for you... I dunno if you can take the criticism and the kids that can be mean.

Wow, you have a way with words. Maybe your calling is actually being an author. You can write a self-portrait character who calls people nonsense terms, believes in conspiracy theories, and delivers those sick burns. 

But really tho, I think you may be too sensitive to live in a foreign country. Best to get out while you can. I can PM you some career options where you don't have to work around other people.

Anyway, I totally would post the contents of a PM, but it also depends on the contents of the PM. If the main aim of the PM is to harass or threaten me, it has a higher chance of ending up on the board for all to see. I'm not beneath public shaming. If your main/sole purpose is to pointlessly fight/insult or to sow discord in general, you will not get around that by taking it to PM, especially if it came about as a result of public posts/argument. Shitty behavior doesn't become less shitty just because you try to hide it in a PM. In fact, it just makes it even more shitty.

Continuing an argument or debate that actually has grounds or merit, though, or disclosing any information of a personal matter, stays behind closed doors.

A word of advice: If you don't want or aren't comfortable with something winding up in front of the public, don't put it on the internet. We do take measures against those posting private information along the lines of doxxing, but PMs themselves aren't necessarily private. Also if anyone is harassing anyone else in PMs, feel free to let the mods know with unaltered full-screen screenshots. This behavior is not tolerated.
