Teaching grade 5 & 6 students to read!
« on: September 12, 2018, 10:44:59 AM »
Hi everyone! Hope everyone is doing well!

So I teach at a very small country school.
These students do not go any academies because they are
far from the city and most of the student's parents can't afford Hagwons.

I was wondering if anyone has any tips to teach older kids to read English.
I have noticed that the other teachers are not really worried but it's difficult to find activities and
games because they are low.
I need something that people have used to teach them..any tips would be amazing!
Thank you in advance!

Try creating a system where the students know that once a week on the same day you will do some reading together.  Each reading class should be almost identical (in the beginning) ask the same types of questions and do things the same way so the students can feel comfortable and know what to expect.  The reading should be about 2 paragraphs and contain only 3- 5  words that they don't know.  Maybe read the story to them first then have them read it again with their partner or in a  group. You can also try popcorn reading or Baskin Robbins reading game. Make groups and assign each student a role (like  circle unknown words, use a dictionary to define unknown words, write a summary, explain the reading to the group).   Also, it is helpful to start every lesson with a game or activity to review sight words.

I would try to maybe take 5 minutes of a class to focus on phonics. Try learning 1-3 different phonics 'rules' each class. Also, just not the b,c,d, etc. sounds but the more complicated ones like blends (bl, gr, nd, etc.) or pairs (a-e, ea, ie, etc.). Then, try to do a little game with that new sound(s), or after they learn a few, they can play a game with them.

My kids are in the same situation. Not sure why nobody bothered to teach them phonics up to this point but they need to understand phonics in order to be able to read.

It's not exactly super fun, but you could spend a few minutes during the beginning and/or end of class doing phonics drills. If you make it a part of greeting and keep it short, you can memorize several new phonics rules per week and then reference them frequently while practicing reading/writing/spelling in class.

Using a simple "'__' says '__'." format works pretty well. (Ex: 'A' says 'aah' and 'aye' and 'aww'. 'B' says 'buh', etc.)
Depending on how intensely you want to work on phonics with your students, you can make flashcards or a PPT slide with each new sound so that the kids can practice in and out of class.

If you're interested, I have a spreadsheet with 70 [American] English phonics rules that you can use to teach your kids.

So what I do with my 3-6ers is that I teach them the alphabet and phonics obviously, but I have been introducing sight words to them. This is how elementary students in my country are taught how to read. Learning how to recognize words. With the sight words I teach them I also play games with them so it builds their recognition skills. Next school year I plan on doing a one-on-one assessment to see where my students are since obviously some students can read better than the others.

edit: oh and spelling tests! Test their spelling when they are learning new words whether they are from the textbook or from words you are introducing to themselves.
