(2010 National) Grade 3, Lesson 1 "Hello, My name is Minsu"
« on: March 03, 2010, 01:37:57 pm »
A lot of us are starting out in 3rd Grade for the first time (Something about districts trying to hire part-timers for 4th grade?), so I'm sure we all need a leg up here. I'm going to do a Bingo game and a quick Quiz for the first part of Lesson 1. Anyone else have any other ideas?

Good stuff.
I have a powerpoint for the characters from the book. It might be my intro PP as well.
Also, a roleplay script.
Edit: Added a simple Hidden Picture game and a time filler/missing letters worksheet.

Right-Click, "Order" and "Move to Back". Think of each of your images or objects as a "layer". If you've ever worked in Photoshop, this is obvious. Moving it to the back puts it "behind" everything.

Also, I used the wrong wording in the word baloons. It should be "Hi! I'm _____" not "Hi! My name is ______" small mistake, but I think that's the phrase for the next section.

Glad you liked it!

Heres a ppt. for Hello I'm Minsu. I found. I changed it up bit. This ppt is good to help teach students the characters names as well as "Hello my name is ..."

Just FYI: MY kids took a really long time to fill in the Bingo cards (I let them walk around the room and ask each other their names), so we're actually going to PLAY Bingo in Lesson 2 and use the new verbage (My name is ...) for the game. Nice way to stretch the material :)

thanks for these!

In part 3 I've changed the game in the guide to name and actions game.

children stand in a circle (groups of 5 or 6) and 1st student says 'hello, my name is....' and they do an action. 2nd student says 'hello (1st student name)' + action, I'm ......' + action. So it gets harder and harder because they have to remember each other's actions.

Hope this is a useful activity for you!

Here are my 'lesson plans' / materials for this unit. Sorry the lesson plans aren't in a very good format, my school is happy for me to just have them as notes for myself.

Sorry for any duplication of materials borrowed from other people on waygook, and thanks for originally posting them!

Here's a song and video I made about the days of the week. I wasn't sure which post to put it in but i figured it'd be ok to show at the beginning of the semester.

An animated story to teach "What's your name?" "I'm..." "My name's" and "nice to meet you."

Because Mediafire is gone, I'm gonna upload my stuff here :]

Some of it's mine, some of it I got from Mediafire and fixed, or some of it is just a blatant steal from mediafire ;].

"Pass the Chicken Game" Grade 3 Lesson 1 YBM Si Sa HELLO
« Reply #15 on: March 07, 2011, 09:46:53 am »
This is a take on the standard "Pass the Ball" game, just modified to use a new object to engage the children who might have grown weary of the ball.

I found rubber chickens at a balloon/party store. I goofed on the clerk and asked him how I should cook them. Got a befuddled stare, but followed by a chuckle when I said, "Just kidding" If you can't find, or don't wait to pay for rubber chickens, I've seen plenty of "chicken" socks around. Perhaps you could stuff them with paper to create little "balls o' chicken" to pass around.

Many thanks to the original poster of the "Pass the Chicken" templates and to another poster from whom I borrowed the other images.

The book I'm using doesn't have any picture cards for this unit. So I'm going to make copies of the cards from the old book, so we can play snap.

Here's a scanned copy in case you want to do the same.

In addition to the alphabet song, for which I use the super simple variety, I like to start out the 3rd graders with the attached "Who are you" you clip (instead of the lame "What's your name?") which also nicely incorporates the vowels.  Here's a Vowel Worksheet to go with the clip.  I also use the Beatles "Hello, Goodbye" for which there are some nice vids on Utube.
