For my last few classes, I'm planning to show an English movie. Ideally, I'd like something that can be shown over two 45-minute classes. I've been here a year and a half and I've never shown a movie. It's right after the students finish their exams and there is that 2 week period of craziness before the summer break so I thought I'd treat myself!
Also, what websites do you use to find English movies with Korean subtitles?

Thanks!!

Spirited Away is a pretty amazing movie, the kids went crazy for it. I actually played it in Korean, with English subtitles. Gulliver's Travels would be perfect. Simpsons Movie.
All these movies are available for 2000won from street-side bootleggers with Korean subtitles. You can also rent a movie for 2 nights from a "Book and Movie library" that are all over if you start looking for them. I just got a membership at one, and they have lots of movies for me, too.

Thanks for the ideas! My computer has some sort of DVD problem so downloading is the way to go. I like the Megamind idea because it's new but Ratatouille should be a safe movie to show. As for the Simpson's I got in trouble showing a "Treehouse of Horrors" because the students (aged 13) were complaining that it was "too scary". Wussies!!

charlie and the chocolate family-johnny depp version is a winner-used it with both middle school and elementary school, and there is an insane amount of accompanying worksheets online:Lots about describing characters physical/personality.
Made a movie poster and review for it, as well as invented our own candy . Lots to do with it~!

Despicable me
Megamind
Happy Feet went well.
Kang Fu panda-although by now most students have seen the first one .

Get Smart is pure gold when it comes to middle school students. I've played it for first through third grade students, and they were in love with it. Most of them asked me to have it after class. The teachers definitely loved it as well. Several came up to me after class to find it or get the name of it properly so they could order it.

They will like almost any Disney movie. Even my high school students love them. I showed finding nemo and they loved it. Korean school children mature a little slower than western students. If i showed nemo at my school i graduated at, they would call me lame or say it is stupid. Here they love it usually.

basically, the newer the better.

Most of my students whinge if I show them the likes of Finding Nemo / Kung Fu Panda etc as they've seen them a million times already (or their homeroom teachers have already showed them prior).

Hellboy 2:The Golden Army, Get Smart, Kung Fu Panda were very popular movies with my Middle School students.

Like everyone who's mentioned Kung Fu Panda most of my middle school students complained because they had seen it, but they still preferred it over doing any kind of classwork. I liked using Kung Fu Panda because I was able to find a lot of activities for it.

Originally Get Smart wasn't popular because they never heard of it so they didn't want to see it, but after I told them they could watch this or do classwork, they decided to watch the movie. And...they absolutely loved it. They were always laughing and even my co-teachers thought the movie was entertaining. Also if your students are into pro wrestling they might like it because of The Great Khali and The Rock who play big roles in the film.

Hellboy 2 was more popular with the boys than it was with the girls. My guess is that most of them have seen it too many times by now also.

Mine loved Monsters, Inc. and Pirates of the Caribbean.
I have heard that Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is pretty popular with the middle schoolers as well...

You can try some classic movies like The Princess Bride. They always get a kick of Andre the giant.

My CT showed some of her classes "Dead Poet's Society" and they seemed really into it.  I think they were fascinated by the depiction of American school life, and the parallels to their own school experience.  (Granted, the movie depicts America in the 1950's.... but still.)  If you show this movie, watch out for the nekkid bits.... there's a couple.

As far as websites, you may want to check out wedisk.co.kr.  You can download movies with Korean subtitles there for about 400W each.  You may have to get your CT to help you set up an account, as most of the site is in Hangul.

There's an episode of the TV show called 'Supernatural' in either season 2 or 3 called 'The Mystery Spot.' My kids loved it since they didn't have to watch the whole series to understand the plot and it's a pretty funny episode. I also showed the first half of 'Full Metal Jacket' when my co-teacher wasn't present due to graduation preparation. My kids LOVED that movie. lol
