hey its been how you holding up?  ya not bad for your lesson you should include the video to play with the slide instead of just going on youtube to search it.  I think it looks cleaner than searching online to get it during class.  Overall not bad my friend.
I'm not a vlogger or blogger, so I make videos of things I do in and around school and Korea.

thanks mojussa! i don't know how to embed videos into my pp. i already notice a considerable performance hit with all the animations in the pp. wouldn't the video make pp work unbearably slow?

just downloaded the lesson and I have to say, I LOVE the opening statement. I completely agree with that this is the best role of native teachers in Korean public schools.

Thanks for your effort. This looks great! My and you have the same philosophy in relation to being more of a teacher of culture than language... ;)

thanks for the words of support. everyone has a different take on what their roles are. i just think it's important to clearly state what that is, so you work towards something as opposed to "just teaching"

let me know how it goes!

great idea. you could adapt this for after school/summer camp.

you could get some images from a magazine. ask them to rip out

1) beautiful people

2) ugly people

ask them:

1) do the beautiful people look like they have make up?
2) do you think they are successful/unsuccessful?
3) do they look real?
4) do you know anyone who looks like this?
5) do you think they have been photoshopped?

ask the same questions with the 'ugly' people.

* it s good to get them thinking about issues such as judging people before you know them/ the harmful effects of advertising on young people.

* that way you are not only teaching them a language point and vocab, you are getting them to think for themselves.

thanks!
 :D

:D The powerpoint made the lesson!  Thank you for the great idea.  I brought in old newpapers and had them find people/places/things that they thought were beautiful or ugly.  One kid ripped out George W. Bush and said "teacher, ugly monkey!"  I was so proud.

Wow!  I have had a similar topic in my head for awhile now, wanting to illustrate how what we consider "beautiful" to be so different among cultures.

I could not have topped this--you clearly articulated each point I want to make to my students!  Your pictures illustrating beauty in varying cultures are just wonderful.  Thank you so much for sharing!  Cheers to your creativity, passion, and hard work.   :D

Hey MG,

I'm using a PC and a program titled Cyberlink Powerdirector its a free trial program, but can be easily hacked so that the 30day limitation is unlimited.

Mr. mojussa,
do you use a mac to make those sweet videos?

You're right if your performance on the comp suffers then don't worry about it.   But on MS Office 07 its quite easy.  Click on the 'Insert' tab and then on the very right you will see 'Movie' and a drop down menu to chose from and click 'movie from file'

thanks mojussa! i don't know how to embed videos into my pp. i already notice a considerable performance hit with all the animations in the pp. wouldn't the video make pp work unbearably slow?

Hi, thanks for this great powerpoint. I really like it and just need to figure out what chapter I can incorporate this lesson into (girls middle school). I only have a couple of classes that might be able to handle this lesson's level of English. I would love to use it for all my classes though as this is one of my favorite topics!
Good job!

Thank you so much!

I had a Beauty lesson on my to do list after my students made up skits for their speaking tests and more than one contained derogatory references to other races  >:((they sadly thought it was funny) as well as how one must study hard now and can 'fix' themselves when they are 18 with plastic surgery.  :o

I teach at an all girls middle school and it was scary stuff. Thanks again.

Wow - thanks so much!  I've never had students clap after a lesson before.  I never thought that a lesson like this (no grammar point to teach, etc. ) could work, but it was great!

Anyway, I went ahead and embedded the youtube video of the dove commercial into your powerpoint, so I'll repost my version in case anyone wants it.

I also added some more Korean translations of things in the ppt (like the country names), as well as some extra slides in the "beauty in other cultures" section including a couple more tribal things, american rappers' grillz, and some stuff from extreme body modification subcultures including subdermal implants, crazy piercings, and injections of saline solution to create giant forehead lumps -lol.  I made those additions because I noticed how much of a kick my kids got out of the tribal lip discs, and I thought they might enjoy some other weird stuff.

I also added a backside to the worksheet originally provided which includes a section matching country names in English to the Hangeul, which I've attached in case anyone wants 'em.

Thanks again for your great lesson!  It was so rewarding to actually commincate a worthwhile philosophical concept to my students!

P.S. I encourage people to use "youtube downloader," a software application that allows you to download youtube videos into files with any extension you want.  I use it so that I can embed videos from my powerpoints that are stored on my own USB, so I'm not dependent on the internet.

Wow! I'm really touched to hear so many people enjoyed the lesson. I mean, it's one thing for people to comment on the lesson based on a brief preview shortly after dl'ing the pp, but it's another to have the students reactions verify it. Thank you for that! It made my day!
