2010 Grade 4 Lesson 1 - Nice To Meet You.

For the game in Lesson 1, Period 3, the instructions include rolling a paper die with weather phenomenon printed on each side. Because the book didn't provide a paper die, I made my own. Depending on how adept your kids are at cutting (mine are VERY slow) you can cut the die beforehand and let the kids tape it in class.
I made the template with tabs for gluing together. However, when I tried one myself, it seemed easier to cut the tabs off (easier to cut) and tape the die together (stronger and easier than glue). I left the tabs on so you can decide what works best for you.
Hope this helps!

I don't start teaching until monday so I made this today for the unit.
Edit: Added a wordsearch with the vocabulary and a worksheet where they draw a line from sentence to picture.
Final Edit: Added a roleplay script. (My co-teacher always had me make them for everything.)
Final Edit(for real): Added flash cards that my co-teacher asked me to make for the "Let's Practice" section of the textbook.

This is my version of the weather cube. It has a easy shape for the cube to be made and the pictures are pretty cute, too. I have to make 18 so I'll be making them all in advance. There's also an 11x17 for the first lesson for the teacher. Good luck with yours!

Thanks for these!
Just to let you know you can get die to print out from
www.toolsforeducato
rs.com
for free. It's part of mes-english.com. Lots of different topics, you can choose words or pictures... also bingo sheets, board games, worksheets, flashcards, games cards.
And another tip - one of the administrators from my school suggested putting a little bit of rolled up scrap paper inside, it makes them fun to shake because they rattle!

My co-teacher asked me to teach the kids this instead of the chant in the book
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ikdqNVoCYQ
I thought it would be a bit too fast and have too many hand actions for it to work. I didn't have time to edit the video to a slower pace, she suggested this randomly after seeing how another co-teacher and I added actions to a grade 3 chant.
I did this class all day today and to my surprise, everyone went crazy for it. The girls got the actions straight away, and the boys were so amused by the wiggling at the end they sat through the video several times and got the actions down. The shy kids were at least making hand actions, it didn't get them to actually talk, but I was excited to see them doing something.

I'm lazy so instead of making paper dice, I just made a ppt to teach the student to correspond different weather to different numbers, and then just use legular dice for the game.

glad I'm not the only lazy one- I had flashcards for the six weather phenomena which I taped to the board - I wrote the number and name under each card - I had simple dice for each pair of kids - worked fine

Here are my 'lesson plans' and materials for this unit. Sorry the lesson plans aren't in a very good format, my school is happy for me to just have them as notes for myself.

Here's a song and video I made about the days of the week. I figured it would be good to use at the beginning of the semester or if you run out of ideas. The students enjoyed it!!

I'm so happy to finally contribute to this site. You guys are awesome and amazing and have given me so many great ideas. I'm happy to give back.
I made a Mario game on powerpoint with six characters and instructions on the first slide. Sound effects are included! (spent hours on this thing) You can play this game with any lesson however way you want (rock, paper, scissors/answer questions/do the correct action/etc.) for your kids to be able to advance through the map.
Is there a way to copy this post in every unit? I'm going to post it in the first unit of each grade and the index for people, but I was wondering if there was an easy way to post it for every unit.
Game instructions:
Slide 3 - Click on the characters to have them move around the map. They will move to each castle (1-6) and then advance to Bowsers cave in the middle to kick his rump and save Peach.
Slide 4 Click the winning character to grant them a 1up.
Enjoy!!!

I'm an EPIK teacher teaching through video-conferencing, so my lessons have to be very simple, but these powerpoints will work well if your students are low-level and/or need a lot of repetition.

I teach at an elementary school in Gwangju (3rd, 4th and 5th grade). My students are at an extraordinarily high level (80% go to hagwons 3 times a week or more), so the textbook is too low for them, and the school asked me to ratchet up the rigor in my lesson plans.
Last year during a club class I realized how much students love would you rather exercises because most of their day is spent memorizing/ regurgitation information as opposed to being creative. Whether you classroom is high-level or not, I have implemented an activity called would you want?, in which every week I present students with 5 slides asking them if they would want one of two items, both of which are relevant to or included in the weekly vocabulary. The students have 1 minute to think and discuss with a friend, then I ask for volunteers or call numbers to see who will answer the question (I usually choose three students a slide). I always make sure to write the sentence frame I would want ______ because _____. So that students called on will have something to rely on/ something with which to practice their reading skills, and the 1 minute talk time holds students accountable without stressing them out.
Long story short- this activity gets students talking! Try it out if you have time in your classroom today!

Here's what I did for my students for lesson 1. It's a general intro and review with activities and a worksheet to go along with one activity. Enjoy!
