« on: March 10, 2010, 03:31:18 pm »
Hi,

My co-teacher ;) made pp for this lesson. The game is students have to

say sentences in sequences. Instruction is in Korean. Enjoy and thanks Sheila

for your hard work. ;)

Thanks for posting this - I was about to ask everyone if they knew what the phrases were supposed to be!

Grade 4, Lesson 2: "Don't Do That!" Activities?
« Reply #2 on: March 16, 2010, 02:04:39 pm »
I'm sitting at my desk, looking through the Teacher's Guide for the activity they suggest for Lesson 2, 1차시... My co-teacher would like me to find an activity that would involve the whole class, and the card game and "Hopscotch" don't seem to fit the bill. I'd like to steer away from anything involving the computer or PowerPoint... But at this point in the afternoon, I'm only coming up with a big blank.

Suggestions? They're more than welcome!

Show them a video from you tube, like "You've been framed" (the really funny ones where people fall over and slide etc and it's all caught on camera, then after ask them get them to say what they saw. eg. Don't......

Thanks for the suggestion! I showed a short video of "You've Been Framed", and it went over really well.

I also ended up playing a listening game using blown-up prints of the cards that are in the back of the grade 4 book. I out six on a sheet, and then gave one sheet per table. They then had to listen to what I said, and number the pictures in the correct order. After that, we played another round and they had to use a mini voice recorder to record their groups answers, so it also incorporated speaking. It went fairly smoothly!

Thanks for this just a few points...

1. The same watch out card is in there twice,
2. The 5th slide should be "Yes, I'm OK." not "I'm OK."
3. Slide 12 is "Wow, beautiful." not "Look at the flower."
4. Slide 14 is a CD mistake from what I can tell. The CD has "Look at the monkey" but the book has a second watch out card with Zeeto sniffing flowers and a bee coming at him.

Here are my 'lesson plans' and materials for this unit. Sorry the lesson plans aren't in a very good format, my school is happy for me to just have them as notes for myself.

Using the "You've Been Framed" idea:

I used this clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2Z5_HwAXNI   (which is slightly better quality than some of the others out there)

Then made the attached powerpoint. It has screenshots of certain points of the clip, combined with a " Don't do that" expression.

Plan:
1. Students watch the movie one time with sound.
2. Use powerpoint to learn key expressions
3. Watch the movie again, without sound, and the students can shout out an appropriate expression to go with the accident.

**A handful of the expressions aren't part of the target language, but are still extremely valuable for their English toolkit.

A Sentence unscramble game for this chapter. They're all "Don't..." sentences.

I teach at an elementary school in Gwangju (3rd, 4th and 5th grade). My students are at an extraordinarily high level (80% go to hagwons 3 times a week or more), so the textbook is too low for them, and the school asked me to ratchet up the rigor in my lesson plans.

Last year during a club class I realized how much students love “would you rather” exercises because most of their day is spent memorizing/ regurgitation information as opposed to being creative. Whether you classroom is high-level or not, I have implemented an activity called “would you want?”, in which every week I present students with 5 slides asking them if they would want one of two items, both of which are relevant to or included in the weekly vocabulary. The students have 1 minute to think and discuss with a friend, then I ask for volunteers or call numbers to see who will answer the question (I usually choose three students a slide).  I always make sure to write the sentence frame “I would want ______ because _____.” So that students called on will have something to rely on/ something with which to practice their reading skills, and the 1 minute talk time holds students accountable without stressing them out.

Long story short- this activity gets students talking! Try it out if you have time in your classroom today!

My students really enjoyed the video! '1 more time, 1 more time!' they kept yelling. The used the 'Watch out!' appropriately and it sounded so natural! Thank you!
