Second, that quote was in reference to a debate we were having over whether lying was proof of guilt. I was explaining how the mere fact that someone lied to the cops, does not make them a suspect in whatever crime you are investigating. This is because EVERYONE lies to the police. If you assumed anyone who lied to you was the guilty party, you'd be a terrible investigator. You claimed that people wouldn't normally lie to investigators. Well according to investigators themselves, and the people who follow their work, that's not the case. Everyone, normal people, will lie for no reason whatsoever. They can just be a simple witness and they'll still lie about something. Same thing goes for doctors and dentists- the amount of nonstop lies they deal with is just a fact of life. You also asserted that lying was not a standard human behavior. That's what the stuff below was about. All the "little" ways people lie and the things they'll lie about.

However, these lies are all under interrogation and stated by people who think they might be in some kind of trouble. If I was to interrogate you about say, whether you like to gamble and whether you're any good at it, what your porno habits are or what titillates you, or violent fantasies, or how long you lasted last time you had sex, or how much time you spend playing video games, or whether you're sticking to your diet, or something, within 20 questions, you'll probably have lied at least once. If you didn't you actually wouldn't be normal. Almost everyone will lie about embarrassing past experiences or sexual fetishes or whatever. That stuff IS embarrassing to talk about with a complete stranger. It is natural, indeed, probably biologically natural and hardwired into us to be secretive about aspects of our private lives like that.

Lastly, you make the assumption that because people do lie about things and that everyone tells lies, that EVERYTHING is a lie. That's taking something to it's most ridiculous logical conclusion.

I didn't change the title, and I don't know who did, but if I had to hazard a guess, I suppose that I'd say that the title was changed because the general consensus on that thread (including the OP) was that labeling the (very inappropriate) actions of 8 year-olds as sexual assault might have been a bit drastic, and that the thread name might lead people to expect a very different kind of discussion.

    Inconsistent moderating is probably due to the fact that there are about half a dozen active mods who each have their own tolerances and approaches to moderating.
