celebrity schedules- future tense practice
« on: March 17, 2010, 08:25:45 am »
Hey guys,

This is my third year running this lesson and I think I've finally figured out how to make it enjoyable for the students- as with everything, make it a game.

I start by going through the PowerPoint, explaining that they should use the future tense to describe a celebrity's schedule.  The catch is however, they must include clues about which celebrity they are in the schedule, but never actually say the person's name.  There are a few examples in the powerpoint so the students catch on pretty quickly.  After a student guesses the first example in my PowerPoint I usually give them some candy, this gets everyone's attention.

I have them work in pairs and distribute one schedule to each pair (half a sheet).  They have a good part of the class to choose a celebrity and fill in their schedule.  With the last bit of class each pair comes to the front and presents their schedule, I usually give candy to whichever student figures out the answer.

Make sure you tell them to keep their celebrity a secret until it's their turn to present, otherwise it's no fun!  Hope this works out for you, it's been working well for me!

Oh, and I got the idea for this lesson from http://www.edochan.com/teaching/monkeys.htm.  It's a pretty good resource and has a lot of game ideas on it.  I recommend checking it out!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for this lesson. Even my rowdiest boys class were shhhh-ing each other to hear clues about the unknown celebrity. They loved it. It was alot of fun and everyone actively participated. Great lesson!

If you do a search, there is an extension on the windows site to let you open .pptx files. I'm fairly PC illiterate but my Korean school computers directed me to the site to download whatever it was I  needed and now I have no problems opening the files. If you can't find it, I can resave it and upload my version of the powerpoint next time I'm on my classroom computer. cheers

Awesome way to make the future tense relevant to rowdy teenage students. Nothing calls for their attention like movie stars and pop idols.

fantastic. I found this lesson by accident, but it's definitely a great way to introduce the future tense.
