I went to Phuket in Thailand a few years ago and rented a car, and found that it was better to drive there than in Korea. The local Thai drivers were pretty slow and cautious. Only real dangers were the crappy narrow roads and the foreign tourists zipping around recklessly on crappy scooters.
I have similar experiences in Phuket. Havent been elsewhere in Thailand, but I have heard Phuket is not typical.
