Thailand, in my opinion has the worst drivers on earth and facts seem to bear that up.

A survey was done a few years back, 2 or 3, asking Thai drivers what they could do to prevent road accidents. About 30% said: NOTHING

1 in every 3 drivers said there was nothing they could do, nothing at all, to prevent an accident. Checking mirrors, defensive driving, looking around before you change lanes, having a safe vehicle to drive with basic stuff like headlights that work....nothing could be done to prevent an accident.

That's why Thais have so many amulets hanging from their  rearview mirrors. And, if they get in an accident and live, it is 100% a direct result of their amulets and all of their friends, relatives and colleagues go out and buy the same amulets to add to their collection.

It's the scariest place I have ever driven.

I have never met a Thai who doesn't know someone who was seriously injured or killed in an accident.

In the Philippines it is a rosary, apparently if you have one then the traffic laws don't apply nor does the law of physics, so drive like you want.

True.

Thais can easily get away with the worst driving, accidents and hitting someone (especially farangs) if they claim they saw a ghost on the road. 

....crap like that is not uncommon.

I took the train and flew when I could during my month in Thailand because I saw   two deadly car accidents in my first weekend there (AFTER hearing of the danger prior to arriving). And this was back in 2009.

I am not shocked it hasn't changed.

I went to Phuket in Thailand a few years ago and rented a car, and found that it was better to drive there than in Korea. The local Thai drivers were pretty slow and cautious. Only real dangers were the crappy narrow roads and the foreign tourists zipping around recklessly on crappy scooters.

In Thailand, when I was in Bangkok and Chiang Mai, I don't believe I saw any cars or scooters going through red lights. The scooters all used to just gather at the front and wait for the light changes.

Phuket is very far from typical Thailand. Farangs abound. Check out the plethora of insane Thai driving videos.

Shortly after BKK opened up a Thai Airways wide body slid off the runway because it landed too far down and didn't have enough stopping distance. The Thai Transit Authority brought in all the monks it could find, held a baci, built a spirit house to call the pi back home and thus the airport was restored to all its safety, goodness and glory.
