Norm McDonald is dead
« on: September 18, 2021, 09:30:59 am »
This guy was a legend. His parents were teachers in Valcartier, Quebec. I went to school there for 2 years.

I always thought of him as a more right-wing, less funny Dennis Miller.

But he was witty on SNL.

Dennis Miller loved him and considered Norm one of the best out there. Dennis is laughing before Norm even sits down cuz he knows he's going to be blown away.

Well, you clearly showed who was more right wing.

The second I saw this topic five days after it had already been discussed on here I knew it had to be Liechtenstein's post.  A number of tributes to Norm through the Youtube thread went up the day he died.  Along with John Candy this is a celebrity death that truly made me sad.  I felt like someone I knew had suddenly died even though I didn't know him.  I just enjoyed his output so much.

Do you even know who either of these guys are?  Norm regularly avoided talking about politicians because he considered it low hanging fruit in the comedic world.  Go search the interview he did with sister-in-law, Joyce Napier, a CBC journalist where he discusses Justin Trudeau and what he thinks about politics in comedy.  Dennis Miller is famously right wing.

The genius to this joke wasn't the actual joke, but the telling of it, which is one of Norm's hallmark styles.  Conan, among others, has put up a big hour long podcast to discuss Norm and one of the things he discusses is the moth joke.  Apparently, the joke itself came from Colin Quinn, but on the Conan show they unexpectedly asked Norm to stick around because he was such a good interview.  He had no material so he asked how long the segment would be and they said seven minutes.  The brilliance of it was that Norm took this simple joke and on the fly stretched it out to several minutes and added this Chekhovian element off the top of his head to keep it going before he wrapped it up at the simple punchline.

I interviewed Dennis Miller on the phone.

(I had lunch with Martin Sheen, my more interesting story.)

I received a thank you text message from Justin Trudeau after my full-page eulogy/profile of his father's career in 2000 when I ran a news room on Vancouver Island (hence, VanIslander).

So, how did you arrive at the conclusion Norm Macdonald was more right wing than the very openly right wing Dennis Miller?  Your anecdote above is completely unrelated.

I like Norm's story about staying at a bed and breakfast and playing scrabble.

And this with Jerry Seinfeld in a coffee shop....
