Texting & Slang

Used this lesson for one of my online classes for first grade. The general outline and some photos are from another ppt I saw on here but all the heavy lifting of the ppt is me. For online, I added in a video of myself as a memoji while explaining each word to make it more interesting for the students to watch but you can just as easily use in class as a free lesson.

Feel free to change any of the shorthand or slang words covered by clicking on the text boxes to adjust the text. The shapes should still move as intended. You'll also need to download the font file below to edit or search "SF Pro Heavy" font to download elsewhere. It's subtle but the font adds to the whole "iphone" feel  ;D

If using in class, it probably won't fill up a full class period so I'd drew up a quick worksheet where students can guess the meaning of each abbreviation/slang before you get into it.

Great lesson! I will save for later. My students and coteachers want me to do fun/cool lessons but I struggle with ideas

That's a fantastic idea! Children feel more connected to a teacher who at least partially speaks their language or understands them more than their parents :D

This lesson went well with my 3rd and 2nd year MS students, as well as my HS students. It took about 20-25 minutes for MS and 30 minutes for HS. I took a bunch of texting messages from the web and my own, simplified the English and left the slang in, and had students decipher the meanings from slang to 'proper English.' The slangs provided by OP was used in my extension activity. My extension activity took the remainder of the class and even my advanced students were challenged and were surprised how many spelling errors they left uncorrected. I can link my extension activity if anyone's interested.

Thank you for the amazing and quality work! It saved my ass when I didn't plan anything for the 1st week of the new semester after summer vacation.  The extension activity is a spelling error correction worksheet. I added onto your PPT extra slides explaining to students that two words that sound similar can be spelled differently, like homophones. For example, 'da' and 'the', 'mi' and 'me', or 'dis' and 'this.' I'll link the revised PPT and the extra activity here for y'all.
