I never read the book, but this is easily one of my favorite films and one of the best films I've ever seen. Now before anyone said "here's a list of movies that are better," I'm not much of a movie person in general so it's not like I've seen a ton of movies, nor do I want to see a ton. But I think the reason why I liked this one so much is that it doesn't feel like a typical movie, and definitely not like a modern blockbuster. It really feels like you're watching a book, a feeling I got even though I didn't even read the book, which is not an easy task with adaptions. I enjoyed that there's basically no humor, which makes sense given the dire circumstances (I'm so tired of quippy blockbuster humor). Some people said it was boring, but I didn't feel that way at all. Even when the characters are just talking, it always feels purposeful and like it's keeping the momentum of the plot moving forward. Usually I get bored watching movies, but with Dune I didn't want it to end. It also did a good job making me feel tense and worried at the right places. Though I understand why some people might get bored; I saw some people describe it this way: "if you go into it thinking you'll get Star Wars or Lord of the Rings or some kind of fantasy adventure, you'll be bored out of your mind. It's not an action or adventure, it's space politics." And I think that sums it up well; I went into it knowing what to expect and I wasn't disappointed. Actually, there as more action than I expected based on what I'd heard, which was a pleasant surprise.
And of course, the spectacle of this movie honestly makes it worth seeing. Even if you find the plot itself boring, you can still enjoy it just from its visuals and music. The only problem I had with it was that in the theater, the music was sometimes so loud that I couldn't hear what the characters were saying. I had to watch it again at home because there were quite a few lines I missed.
