Fun Taste Lesson: How does it taste?
« on: May 24, 2011, 02:03:12 AM »
Another fun lesson proven to work with after-school 6th graders.

Target phrases: "How does it taste?" "It tastes.."
Target vocab: spicy, salty, sweet, bitter, sour  :-X

Go through the PPT, drill the vocabulary, practice the conversation, quiz it at the end. OR..

Optional: candy (sweet), potato chips (salty), cinnamon gum (spicy), AISH! candy (sour)
I told the students to cover their eyes and gave them a food to eat. They had to tell me what it tasted like. They will absolutely, without a doubt NEVER forget these words. Enjoy!  :P

Great idea. I did a Summer Camp with low-level middle schoolers that blindfolded them and then, with open palms, they had to taste anything I gave them. One thing they particularly enjoyed was Altoids (which you can usually find at a CostCo, if you're close to one) ... I taught them words like "minty" "tangy" along with some others. This tied into an Iron Chef and Cooking Lesson. I'll post it if I can find it.

Oooh! Minty and tangy! Those would have been great! I might tag those on if I ever teach it again, thanks!  ;D

I'm doing a Five Senses Lesson for my winter camp and didn't know where to post it, so I thought this thread would be the most appropriate because I'm also doing a smell/taste test. Attached is an introduction PPT on the five senses and a "Smelling Bee" worksheet.

The worksheet is for the smell/taste experiment they will be doing in class. I will have the students in groups and 1 person from each group will come up to the food station to smell a food. They will then record what they thought they smelled as well as rate the odor. Each student will do this until they've smelled all 5 foods. After they have done the smell test they will then taste the foods that they smelled and identify them on their worksheets. I was originally just going to do a sense of smell experiment but I figured they would want to eat the foods, so it's a combined smell and taste experiment.

Here's where I got the idea from: http://www.gryphonhouse.com/activities/activityDetail.asp?ID=1085&CatID=8

Maybe instead of beer for bitter, you could use coffee :)

Here is a worksheet and PPT I made for a lesson on TASTE.

The worksheet is pretty good.  The PPT has lots of great images for Sweet, Sour, Salty, Bitter, Spicy, and Minty.  It also includes textures like Crunchy, Soft, Creamy, and Hard.

I should mention that annunciata the OP started the PPT and I added several slides to drill the vocab into my students heads.  Thanks annunciata!

Also, JC49, thanks for the song!  I'm going to use it tomorrow for review.
