It is interesting you posted that.  I was walking into a Mapco (southern gas station/convenience store) and I heard this coming out of a car and thought it was decent.  I could not get the lyrics well (right ear is a bit low on fuel) but I could take in the vibe. 

Thanks for posting that...I was wondering who was behind the song.

Back in '87 I had a part time job in college working in a men's wear store (Elk's, a Canadian premier chain until they later folded)  and for the Xmas party the only gay guy on staff had me as his to-gift recipient, and he got me a John Cougar Mellancamp CD. Always liked Mellencamp.  Lots of good tunes but this one sticks out as I am pretty sure I bought the 45 single.  Can't recall the b-side.
