I read about that Prince George Marathon. That is where he decided to run across the country. But that was over 500 kms away from Kamloops so it wasn't the one.
Moreover: reportedly, when he started the Marathon of Hope, he was not a well-known figure and got little to no publicity in the beginning. That makes me conclude that no crowd would gather and wait for hours just to see him, before he became famous during the run. So that is not what Van saw either. Did he run after he had to stop? I found no such information.
So who did Van see just outside of Kamloops?
