What are you doing? Lord of the Rings
« on: May 25, 2011, 11:54:09 am »
I took an existing presentation and BAAM game about present continuous and altered it for Lord of the Rings.  On the Baam game I changed the rules a little because it works better for me.  At the start of the game, I let the class choose how many points they will lose with a BAAM.

Thanks for this! It looks great.  I'm not sure if my students like Lord of the Rings, but we'll soon find out!

Ads for the Hobbit have started to appear on the Subway, so maybe this'll be more on my students' radar now or soon.  I'm not sure how it'll go over with girls yet, but maybe I'll find out soon.  I may try to adapt it to a different pattern I have to teach (Can you give/tell/show me~?), but looking over the pictures, I think I can make that work too.  Thanks for the lesson material!

I don't find this kind of lesson helpful at all.

As someone who has studied multiple languages, you will find its quickly showing them and generally only the smartest will answer, and the retention will not be good.

The grammar itself for the Present Continuous (현재 진행형) isn't explained properly here either

It is not   Subject + Verb (ing)
It is    Subject + to be +  Verb (ing)

Without the verb to be (which should also be double checked for both present and past continuous with the students) the continuous tense doesn't work

I          am / was
You           are / were
He /She/ It     was/ were
We        are/ were
They     are /were
You       are / were

==========================================================

A better way is to ask them what they did on the weekend for the Past Continuous (과거 진행형)

Elicit sentences such as   " I played football "   " I watched TV"
These are simple SVO

You can then ask ...what were you doing at 7pm on Saturday ?

In Korean they add   +고있다 to a verb ...which is the same as our 'ing'
If you can learn some Korean examples it will help

You should then show the grammatical structure.
Get examples from students to write on the board

A worksheet should be given to check their retention.

In a follow up lesson a good excercise is to get a bunch of Historical pictures

E.g   Neil Armstrong on the Moon,  Korea at the World Cup 2002,  A photo of people in class or yourself. But have up to 15 or so

You then write up on the board  "What is happening in the picture ?"
Or for the past continuous.... "What was happening when the picture was taken ? "

You can then guide students through their answers...  Some will shout up
Moon !!!   Armstrong !!!

Elicit the correct answers...

You should ask...what is the subject ?  (주어)  He
What is the BE verb ( BE 동사) ? is
What is he doing...what is the verb (동사) ? walking
Where is he ? ...on the moon   (Object = 목적어)

You can make this into a game easily, or give candy to students who are willing to actually come up to the board and write out the full sentences with encouragement help from other students....instead of you writing and talking all day.
