2010 Grade 4 Lesson 5 What Time Is It?
« on: April 28, 2010, 10:36:56 AM »
Here are the lesson plans for this.  I've reformatted them a little so they fit better.  I didn't check if the dialogue is the same so you may want to listen to it first.  Available for Windows 97-2003 and 2007.

Thanks for the link.

Does anyone know any good songs for telling the time? I'm trying to find a good youtube video with a time song, but all the ones I find don't have lyrics on the screen, which is a must for my class.

Thanks

efl classroom has some pretty useful tools like an LED clock and a video for listening practice.  I use it all the time.

This video is not the most educational video but the students love it and it makes a great motivational tool.

Also, I will use this ppt to review the key sentences.  You can have students just verbally call out the answers or give them dry erase boards and have them write the correct phrases with a partner.

For Grade 4___Unit 5" What Time is it? I used the story book "What time is it Mr. Wolf" very helpful children with the time.

I agree about the HSM vid.  I have the students do a Bogglesworld worksheet on time, very simple, and while they're writing in "It's seven o'clock" and "It's quarter to four", etc.  I play the "Summertime" song, and the love it!

I'm attaching here a video I use for the opening of the class.  I start it a few minutes before the bell rings, and it perks their interest.  Then when class starts I stay silent and get them (if they're not already) chanting "time" to the beat.  During a pregnant pause I write the word time on the blackboard.  It's very simple, but it helps them focus an abstract concept on an English word, a difficult task easily overlooked.

Also, here's a great ppt, depending on how you use it.

I played "Wolf, wolf, what's the time?" at the end of the lesson with my kids. They LOVED that! it got them all using the target language, and it was fun and active!

sorry! I probably should have told you that in the first place!

For "wolf, wolf, what's the time", kids walk in a line behind the 'wolf', chanting "WOLF, WOLF, WHAT'S THE TIME?" the wolf gives random times "it's 1 o'clock, it's 5 o'clock..." etc. Whatever time. But then, at some point, the wolf yells "it's DINNER TIME!" and he turns around and tries to catch someone! whoever is caught then becomes the wolf, and you start again. Kids love the suspense of not knowing when it's going to be dinner time.
Sometimes tho you may find that the kids want to be caught, so they don't run. If this starts happening, I start giving points for NOT being caught, and then reward the person with the most points at the end of the game (which is whenever you want it to be).

how big are your classes? These kinds of games would never work in my class as there are so many students (and lack of space!)

That's why you have a playground! If it's sunny, take them outside for the last 5-10 minutes of class. Make it so the end of the class is outside and then you don't have to waste time walking them back inside.

I'm working on the 3차시 right now, and I like the "Time-Filling" activity in the book, but I'm trying to find some live webcams to supplement it. Does anyone know where I could find cams for Kolkata (Calcutta), Beijing, and Seoul?

Here are my 'lesson plans' and materials for this unit. Sorry the lesson plans aren't in a very good format, my school is happy for me to just have them as notes for myself.

This is a PPT game that includes 10 clocks on colorful backgrounds for students to play the "Guess the Time" game.

The game goes: Divide students into groups, give each group a small white board (or use paper) and have them draw a clock or just write a time on the small white board (-- o'clocks only).

The group(s) that guessed the correct time as shown on the PPT slide get points.

OPEN CLASS 4th Grade- What time is it?
« Reply #18 on: March 15, 2011, 12:07:42 PM »
Hi guys,

I have just been told that I have to plan for my open class even though it is not until May.  My co teacher has told me its my "business" and I must come up with some fun and exciting activities/games!

The topic is "What time is it?"
I'm just wondering if anyone can help me think of some fun and interesting activities we can do in class in relation to 'time'?

Thanks!! :D

Please look at these threads for some ideas on teaching time.

I suggest doing a "body clock" activity, if you have the space in your classroom.  Students love "What time is it, Mr. Wolf," but it might be a bit too rowdy for an open class.

Which lesson period will it be?  First, second, third, or fourth?
