I use the J. Hans book and i just started the advice lesson. It seemed like the book assumed the kids knew the verbs they needed to complete the lesson. They just needed to slap "Should" on at the beginning. For a lesson that didn't seem like it could really take up a fourty minute class I spent some time and made this.

Its a choose your own adventure style game that uses option trees to advance. The graphics are REALLY good. I got a lot of stuff from this guy who makes trading card game art on DeviantArt.

The best part? I didn't really need to teach a thing. After the kids recognize seeing "Should" So many times they begin to pick it up automatically without much coaxing. One runthrough takes up 5-10 minutes but the game has multiple endings so you can start it all over again and go a completely different route. It also has pauses for dialogue, where you could ask the students to give their own opinions of what the protagonist should do.

2013 EDIT:

Since making this game I have retired from teaching...but after seeing more and more comments...some of them kind of creeping me out...I've decided to edit the game. I still think the kids see more scantily clad fictional women on the sides of buses, but it makes me a little sad that some people can't use this resource because the content is objectionable. So I've fixed typos and changed the objectionable images to release ADVICE ADVENTURE 2013 EDIT.

The witch is now wearing a full length dress and Ann looks like an average Korean student. I doubt anyone could find the new images even remotely objectionable.

In addition to this I've also included an introductory PPT. This should explain problems and advice pretty easily. I've used it multiple times with great success.

I hope this helps. Keep fighting the good fight!

Looks cool!  I really like the "choose your own adventure" format.  How big of a group do you use this with?

This looks cool! Thanks!

It's hard to get my students motivated and talking . . . I hope I can maybe use this . . . with better classes (with more advanced students), I might try to get students to say WHY they want to do their option.

Thank you.

I used it for my advanced third grade class of about 30+. As you can assume the language is a little higher but I got even some of my beginner classes to use it with relative success, although it required a lot more prep work.

I'm glad this thing is helping so many teachers out! I wish the waygook message board had unlockable achievements for download numbers. 124!? Woot!

Brilliant game - just used this with my gr2's after using the introductory ppt attached to give the basic terms etc (I found that some of them came up with some pretty funny answers to the question - "What should I do?" on most of the pictures !!!) I then followed this up with the game -  They really enjoyed it. Co-teacher wants a copy !!!!! Thanks for posting  ;D

This went over well with most of my 1st years. Giving students more control is definitely more engaging

I'll reiterate those above and give my thanks for this one too. Very spiffy indeed.

Didn't use it in class itself, but rather with a few of my higher level primary school 5th graders in their break and they loved it! I tidied up a few grammar issues and highlighted the key words videogame style beforehand though, so I'll pop my edit of rednumberix's ppt up below.

Great effort - thanks for the cleaned up spelling version, too!

Some of my students want to know what is the name of the comic that the images come from? Could you PM me the details  please?

Also, I hope to see more like this! Thanks for uploading!

WOW! I didn't think the kids would be this cought up into it!

Well to give your kid the skinny I credited the original artist in the game on slide 6 of the presentation as well as some additional notes on how to run the game and steer it in the right direction.

But I can post the information up here. The art is by a man I know only as Wen-M. He has a pretty high draffic Deviant art Page with ton of great stuff:
http://wen-m.deviantart.com/

Wen-M draws for a role playing and card game called Anima. The game looks great and if I could find a single person to play it with me I would probibly buy it.:
http://agameofthrones.com/edge_minisite.asp?eidm=45

The story itself was written by yours truly! :D so if the kids try looking for the same story they might be a little dissapointed. I have a pretty good imagination and when I see pictures it's pretty easy for me to string them together with random stories. I hope that helps!
