The Darwin Awards Lesson
« on: June 02, 2011, 02:10:42 PM »
This is a lesson on the Darwin Awards - given to people who kill themselves in incredibly stupid ways. I know its a little morbid but I played up the funny side of it more than the death. My students had a good time with the lesson and the activity.

I actually teach at a high school but my students are very low level. I have to make things as simple as possible for them.

I'm posting the video files in case they don't show up in the ppt. They are a little big and I can re-encode them if its a problem.

Here are the video files in case they don't load in the ppt properly.

I like the idea and presentation. But if your kids can do this and you think they are low level, you should teach at the high school I'm at for a day...this is way beyond their level. I'm not sure how I can make it any easier and still keep the essence of the lesson...might save it for a camp lesson or something.

Hey, I did something similar to this in my after school class last year. I would cut up simplified versions of Darwin award stories and have the students re-arrange them in the correct order. The kids really loved it.

For my lesson I did not actually do the part where they arrange the sentences in the right order. I wanted to focus on them working together in groups and writing.

Most of my kids are incapable of writing even basic sentences. I spent a long time on just getting them to understand that a Darwin award is for when someone dies in a very stupid way. The part about how they are named are for the higher level students.

I had to help them a lot with the writing and drawing section but I did manage to impart the point of the story.

I definitely agree it might be better for a camp as class time limits you a lot. Thanks for taking a look.
