Hey guys-

Glad people are finding it useful! I made this extra sheet today at a just-in-case-we-have-extra-time activity. It's basically a "Make Your Own Band Activity" worksheet. Might be useful in a camp situation!

Both the 2007 and 2003 versions are attached! :D

I was also doing a quiz game and was shocked to find out my students didn't even know who the Beatles where!! A good listening activity is to play a Beatles song and the students have to listen for a specific phrase. Really grabs their attention and gets them focusing on English lyrics.  ;)

Nice Ideas.  I think I will try to modify it for advanced elementary.

One note: I include the fact that "psychedelic" is often associated with drugs (I define it as "When your mind sees or thinks things that are not real"). At that point, I'm going to have a conversation about how many people have died when taking drugs. I don't want anyone to think that I'm promoting drug use with my students.

Uhhhh... why don't you just say that psychedelic means 'lots of really bright colours and strange pictures'. I don't think it really matters to them what it really means and it's not like it's a word you use everyday anyways.

But hey... I like what you did there.

Except I'd take out the bits about the 'Across The Universe' movie... mostly because it sucked.

I love this lesson. The students will finally be able to tell me the name of song that isn't "Let It Be." Being from Chicago, I have to include the clip from Ferris Bueller's Day Off singing "Twist and Shout." I know it was a cover song, but I look for any excuse to share things about my home. Thanks for all the hard work everyone.

I find this subject to always be intriguing for both the students and myself - a widely known band, as proved over the years. Always interesting to speak with students from Mainland China with this topic - a more political conversation.

I really like this lesson! I think that I will modify it for high school. Thank. Also, I really like lessons that use song lyrics--really grabs the students' attention and also gets them to work on their listening skills.

I may try to adapt some of this for high school too.  Did you have much success with that?  My students are relatively low proficiency (or high shyness) in English, so I probably won't change much from the middle school lesson except for my highest proficiency classes (since my school separates them).

On a positive note, my school is fairly musical in general, and several of the songs performed as singles or parts of medleys in their recent school festival were Beatles songs, so this lesson should go over really well.  It'd be nice if I could make it more "English lesson" focused, but my co-teachers and students seem to enjoy cultural lessons as much or more than formal English lessons anyway. :)

Also, I did find a nice, simple song lyric template over at ESL Printables in their free templates section, so I'll attach that.  I didn't make it; someone else did.  She designed it for "Yesterday" but it seems like it can be used for many different songs.

Thanks so much for this lesson! I also added in a slide about the Cirque du Soleil show called LOVE that is all Beatles songs. I showed a video and the kids and co-teachers all loved it!  Here's a link to the one I used, but there are tons out there.

whaaat? Across the Universe DID NOT suck. In fact, I opted for the It won't be long song from there instead of some of the other songs. I'm also using Twist and Shout from their early days and Yellow Submarine from their middle period.

This lesson worked very well, the different methods of media kept the attention and most of the time the class was silent absorbing the information like a sponge.

They were very shocked about how John Lennon died.

Eight Days a Week - short intro, no solo, short outro.  8)

Students' own name goes in the '5th Beatle' space.

Double sided so students can write the lyrics in Hangul if they wish
