Families

I'm doing a conversation class on families. I wanted something a little edgy to keep my students interests, so I went with the Simpsons for my theme. I also like that I was able to go beyond the standard: grandparents, parents, and siblings. Using the  Simpsons I am also able to incorporate Uncle, Aunt, twins, adoption, and pets. Let me know what you think.

I think the Simpsons ppt would be a good preteach activity for the worksheets that I use.  The information gap is particularly good because it forces them to practice speaking.  These seem to work very well for me. The worksheets are from BogglesWorldesl.com.

Pandora has Simpsons episodes with Korean subtitles. Of course Korean students will miss a lot of the funny, cultural references, but it is fun times nonetheless.

I did an afterschool class with the Simpsons as well. They only recognized Grandpa Abe out of the grandparents and they complained that Clancy looked too young to be married to Mona. They also complained about Ling not having a father. It was nice to challenge their mindset of a nuclear family. I also made some liberal additions to explain stepmother, half-brother and divorce.

We also sung 'we are family' for karaoke, and did a match the family game, and a family tree puzzle.

I've added some changes to the Simpsons presentation and worksheet above and corrected a couple of errors in it.  It works really well with my low-to-intermediate level middle school students (1st grade middle school low level and half of an upper-intermediate after-school class).  If you want to adapt it for more advanced students, you can add more advanced family relations ("great-" prefix, second cousin, etc.).  I used the beginning slides to review appearance adjectives.
