(YBM Si-Sa) Grade 4, Lesson 8 - "I'm Feeding the Dog"
« on: June 08, 2011, 02:00:59 pm »
I have totally stolen this game from somewhere, but modified it to fit in with this lesson, asking the question:  What are you doing.  Students guess the action when words come up on the screen one by one, relating to the action.  They have to answer in full sentence to get the points.

I made a bomb game for this lesson using Jennifer Yong's Super Mario Blast template, but I personally tweak the rules a little; instead of all enemies loosing half their points, the team in question can steal 3 points from another team.

The students simply have to answer the question: "What is/are he/she/you/they/we doing?" Obviously they have to use the correct pronoun in their answer for their group to receive the allocated points.

thought that mario game was awesome. i added a scoreboard (made by Daejeon) and changed the enemy thing to -1 point (for scoring purposes). other than that, it's the same as the one posted previously ;)

Actually I like to shake it up in terms of the 'icons', i.e. the various mario characters. For example, let the grenade bomb mean they loose all their points, the bullet - another group loose their points, the Venus fly trap - steal 2 points from each group, the ghost - switch points with a group, the brown mushroom manthingy - switch 2 other groups' points, the beast  - steal 5 points from any group, etc.

Oh, and give each team 10 points to begin with, it makes things easier.

Here is a video you can use to teach "what are you doing?"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfG3xoK0sDw&feature=player_embedded#!

Also here are some verb flash cards that you could use with the kids. I'm hoping to play charades with the with them for an open class.

That What are you doing PPT game is fun! The kids really like guessing. I had to edit the hints a bit and take our the slide on "playing the violin" because the hints were tough to guess. The students don't always understand all the hint, so it's good to explain them a bit by drawing them out or telling them what it is (without revealing the answer). Thanks for posting the game!

Here are a few useful PPT's I found that should work well for this lesson.  The first is a simple and informative introduction to the present progressive/continuous.  The second is a slide reveal guessing game.

Also... here are some links to songs/videos that work for this lesson:

When adding the scoreboard in PowerPoint 2007, make sure you save the file as .PPT not .PPTX.  If you save as .PPTX it converts the scoreboard to a static object (unusable image) for those on 2003.

Here is a worksheet for the lower level students. It includes the vocabulary, look and listem and look and speak section.  Feel free to change them as needed. It also includes key sentences and a word search.  This is a great tool for kids to save when test time comes around (it avoids teachers having to tell them what to look at before the test). I change the template for each grade level and have my students save the worksheets to assist them in preparing for the test.  Hope its beneficial in your class.

Rather random title, but here is a small PPT that I changed from my old CT last year and it has a group game and word lotto at the end.

Also an angry bird game

Alos a treasure hunt. Where you print the screen and then print the message on the back cut it up and hadn them out in an envelope to each table. However this year I have 11 grade 4 students so this doesn't work for me!.. ( it's basically a treasure hunt where the kids have to find 4 people doing the same thing!

Here is a what's missing game (which I modified from a previous post from somewhere).

Also a kaboom game for the reading section of the book. I have included the alphabet letters as we have recently been doing phonics (letter sounds) to help with reading.

I will also be using The electric shock company videos for sh and ch.

Also a couple of ppts to explain the grammar fairly simply. P1 for I am and P2 for he/she is etc.

All of these ppts are modified versions of the ones I used last year for 5th grade and 4th grade so they include information from other people's ppts.

I found this spin wheel amongst the grade 5 similar topic. I have made it a little easier for grade 4. The students work in groups and use a paperclip and pencil to make a spinner, so the paper clip gets flicked around the pencil tip on the wheel. The group asks the player a question and the player makes a sentence, they add up their scores as they go.

For the Mario game, an idea to keep up progressive revision I've had is to use previous Look and Read segments as the choice instead of letters and numbers (too easy). I've attached yet another edit of SONofCEY's PPT below to demonstrate.

An alternative would be to replace the calls with phonics words with the relevant grapheme underlined and have them chant the sound twice before ("/l/, /l/, lunch!" from pg 57). This has been done up on a slide at the end. Just clear the contents of Slide 4 and paste the contents of Slide 63 over the empty background if you want this version (don't rearrange the slides or you'll break it).

Edit: Tried it in class and it was way too hard for the students. Some big changes have been made in response to make it a bit fairer:
* Vocabulary that is not expected knowledge has been provided on the slide (infinitive form for verbs).
* "They" slides have been changed (not actually in the syllabus until Grade 5).
* Slides colour coded by subject to be less daunting.
* Contractions removed. Students aware of contractions will use them anyway.
* Intended textbook added to opening slide.

I've found it good to give all teams 4 points prior to starting too. 5 is a round figure, but also a pain to erase with your finger if you're tallying. Hope someone finds this edit worthwhile. ;)

I think most of us are done with this chapter but I'll post this anyway. My co-teacher went through this chapter really quickly and didn't explain much. I think its pretty important for students to understand this chapter so I'm reviewing it in our afternoon classes. I made a PowerPoint with some grammar points in Korean for present continuous and pronouns. There's a few practice speaking slides. I input some slides from a few other things I found on this thread and the 5th grade thread. There's a guessing game to practice verbs and pop-up pics to practice pronouns and a bingo slide at the end.

I liked the Road Runner video that was posted but there were some pretty funny mistakes.  Not sure I will use it in the classroom, besides, most of my kids can barely read...
