High School - New Year Topics
« on: June 08, 2010, 01:18:47 pm »
Another topic I worked one from a bunch of things I found on the net. I haven't quite got down how to make a good ppt yet so take it and change whatever you need to for it work in your class.

I didn't have too much speaking in this other than asking the class for their ideas and brainstorming about the topic and sharing their answers. It was more of a writing class I guess to practice the grammar and phrases I presented.

Nothing special in terms of a lesson plan. I pretty much just followed the slides and had them create their own set of resolutions. A big focus in my class is on adding more detail,so I encouraged longer sentences. Slides 11 throug 18 have pictures of a "problem" and the students had to make a new year resolution to solve/improve the situation.

I gave a handout of some of the slides from the presentation and the worksheet on the other side.

This is a great idea!  Can you post the file as a .ppt format?  (save as 97-2003 ppt version).  My computer cannot open .pptx formats.

thanks!

Hey, I downloaded this last night and used it in class today. It worked really well. I got them to guess americas top 10 in the correct order, the team with the correct amount got some candy. I then got them in groups of three to write the list down again but to give specific examples of how they could achieve each of the resolutions e.g. be more organised - buy a diary and plan ahead... Learn something new - Play the piano.
I then used the creating sentences section for them to write 3 resolutions each.

They worked really hard and seemed to enjoy it.

Thank you for the post.

I revised just the cover slide of the "happy new year" ppt in the 97-03 version so it reads "2011" instead of "2010. I'm working on creating more materials & will post those once I'm finished. (Using this lesson for after-school class on Tuesday). Thanks for sharing!~

I've created a handout with a reading section about New Year's Day and a New Year's Eve party.  There are questions covering vocabulary, comprehension and more.

New Year Predictions
« Reply #9 on: February 22, 2012, 10:40:43 am »
I found this lesson idea from iteslj.org and thought it would be good as the new school year starts in March.  I'm still a bit of a new teacher (about 4 months under my belt!) so any suggestions/advice is much appreciated.  The lesson is pretty simple, teach them about predictions, show them some of my predictions for 2012 and for 5 years from now, and have them make their own predictions for 2012 as well as for 5 years from now.
I'm only worried that what I have prepared won't last the full 50 minutes of class time.  So I'm definitely open to any suggestions! I teach at an all boys technical high school.  Hopefully some of you will also find this idea usefull!
