Music Video Judging Lesson
« on: June 10, 2011, 09:09:16 AM »
This lesson is adapted from the good folks at "Eat Your Kimchi."

The PPT begins with some background about American Idol in America. I introduce the judges and let the students watch a clip of funny auditions for the show. Then I tell the students, now YOU will be a music judge. I explain the vocabulary from the worksheet. It's all pretty self-explanatory once you download these files.

This lesson worked really well in my classes last year. Even my "bad" students were writing sentences about the videos! I'm going to do it again this year, the week before final exams. If anyone has any suggestions for videos that are popular with students this year, let me know. The students really loved the OK Go video for Here It Goes Again and for weeks after kept asking "Teacher, see running machine video, again please!~" (running machine is Konglish for tread mill).

Great lesson. Terrific ppt and worksheets. Look forward to using this in my after-school class. They could use a fun lesson after some of the heavier stuff we've been doing lately.

I can't open it since my school computers  don't support that version of PPT ... do you have a compatible version for Windows XP????  I think 2007.  If so, can you post it for me????????

Saved it in an older version of PPT. You might have to alter/fix some of the screens due to the version change.

been doing this lesson with my HS kids this week because they have midterms next week.

It's been going down well. I edited it a bit and cleaned up the powerpoint. I also updated the info about the American Idols judges to reflect who will be judging in 2014. At the end of the info on American Idol I showed them the clip of the 20 worst American Idol performances ever.

I used completely different music videos. There's no K-Pop in the lesson at all now. The videos I chose, I did so specifically because they are funny, weird, wacky, or are considered iconic music videos.

There are 9 videos listed in the lesson in total, but we only managed to get through 4 in each class. I tried out all of the them, and the first 4 in the PPT are the ones that got the best reactions from the students. The remaining 5 are listed in random order in the PPT. Of course feel free to change around the order if you want  8)

Here's the song list:
1.) Blur - Coffee and TV
2.) OK Go - This Too Shall Pass
3.) Muse - Knights of Cydonia
4.) Foo Fighters - Learn to Fly
5.) The Chemical Brothers - Get Yourself High
6.) NWA - Straight Outta Compton (the CLEAN version - no swearing in here!)
7.) Blink-182 - All the Small Things
8.) Beastie Boys - Sabotage
9.) Phoenix - Entertainment.

The music videos and American Idol clip can be found in this RAR file here:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2Uq9IHzDgjnakswa3FqaWxiQk0/edit?usp=sharing

I also made one slight change to the worksheet - instead of having the band members birthdays, I simply changed that part to "Date the band started".

johnny russian: I just want to point out to you that there's not much diversity in the videos you chose. Almost all of them are "middle aged white guys playing guitars". There's not a single female singer in the 9 videos you chose!

I was in a pinch this morning (got a class dropped on my desk with a few minutes to prepare), and decided to try this out. I did this activity with a group of 7th grade girls today, and made it through 3 videos: Coffee and TV, All the Small Things, and Sabotage.

I especially don't think All the Small Things is appropriate for these kids. There's a lot of weird sexually suggestive gestures in the video. I was honestly a little embarrassed to be showing a group of girls a video with grown men licking objects and dancing in bras. I definitely won't be showing that again.

I'm going to do it again with new videos. I'm going to focus on music that's popular with Western teenagers: Katy Perry, One Direction, stuff like that. It might not be what "I" want to listen to, but I think it's more likely to capture the kids' interest.

I'll work on it some more and post my updates later this week.

yes i admit there isn't much diversity, most of the songs are rock/indie too. the reason i chose those videos though was because they consistently appear on lists of "top 100 music videos of all time," or "top 30 music videos ever" etc. i wasn't really aiming for diversity here but rather to just show them interesting videos that are considered classics (the actual videos, not the songs). unfortunately there are some female singers on those lists but not many.

as for blink-182 - i teach all-boys high school. i checked that video with my co-teacher and she said it was fine for them. i wouldn't have shown it to 1st grade middle school girls though. of course any videos you want to show your classes should ideally be pre-screened by yourself to make sure they're appropriate.

of course anyone doing this lesson is free to show whatever videos they want to their classes. here is a list from NME on the top 100 music videos of all time, from which i chose the videos above: http://www.nme.com/list/100-greatest-music-videos/217342/page/1

happy teaching!  8)

I love this idea! For some reason, our school has no midterms this year, but I will definitely be adapting it for my 5th and 6th graders and playing it during the next post-exam period!

Okay, so it got dragged out over the last week before midterms and the week and a half after midterms, but I've now done this with all of my middle school grades 1-2 classes. They love it!

I simplified the PowerPoint a bit. Basically I want to get them thinking about music audition programs, and then show them how to judge the videos.

I write everything on the board (the artist name, date, etc.), and make sure they copy it correctly.

After watching the video, I have them yell out scores which I write on the board. Then I ask them what they liked about the video and write 3 comments on the board.

I don't go on to the next video until they have all written everything on their paper. My higher level classes figure it out quickly and don't need much help, my lower level classes need a lot of help...

If I get started right at the beginning of class, I can just make it through 4 videos in a class. I picked videos that have been popular in the US over the last year or so.

Pharrell Williams - Happy
Taylor Swift - 22
One Direction - Best Song Ever
Katy Perry - Roar
Imagine Dragons - Radioactive

There are youtube links in the ppt, but our classrooms have old computers and unreliable internet, so I downloaded them. You can get them here:

Hi all,

Just wanted to thank you for this lesson. Have a 1-month class where my job is just edutainment so these lessons are great. I kind of took everyone's vids and .ppts and cut and pasted bits. It worked great. Thanks so much.

I like the idea of this lesson, but I've got a question about the edits. Why even talk about American Idol if you're just going to be showing highly produced music videos? The kids might know a difference, but the singers on American Idol are amateurs and these music videos are not. I'll be removing the first few slides about AI before I show this to my kiddos.

armatures? so you mean they're this?

they talk about American Idol because the students must act like judges, like on American Idol. take it out if you want dude, no-one's stopping you.

Thanks, an answer to my question was what I was seeking. It seemed disconnected to me, so I asked a question. God forbid someone has a typo.

I liked the idea so I borrowed it and tweaked it a bit for my English camp class. This PPT doesn't have the embedded videos but there are links to everything from YT in the slides. I was going for a range of genres so I chose to show them:

Taylor Swift - I Knew You Were Trouble
Eminem - Not Afraid / Love the Way You Lie
John Legend - All of Me (Lindsay Sterling version)
Florida Georgia Line - That's How We Roll
Rebecca Black - Friday
Imagine Dragons - Radioactive

The Taylor Swift and Eminem videos are performances because most shows artfully censor any swearing. Also the Lindsay Sterling version of All of Me was chosen because the official video had a couple of nude scenes and I teach middle school kids.

PS: I threw in the Rebecca Black song because I want the kids to use adjectives other than great or awesome. At least with that one I might get one terrible.

Going to test it on my 3rd year students today since they don't have to come to English camp and see how it goes. I do plan to rework the Dance portion of the presentation but haven't gotten that far yet.

So turns out my 3rd graders are super stone faced and hardcore critics about the videos I chose. They thought Taylor was boring, Florida Georgia Line was so so and I didn't get to all the videos. They loved Eminem but also liked All of Me. The words they used to describe it was "sweet" and "lovely".

After speaking with my coteacher we decided that I'd change one or two of the videos also added to the introduction about an Korean American Idol like show called Superstar K. She said that the kids might be more receptive if they have a video or two they can relate to. So I've changed out one or two videos and now my lineup is as follows:

Ylvis - The Fox
Eminem - Not Afraid
Ariana Grande - Problem (replaced Taylor Swift)
John Legend - All of Me
Pentatonix - Radioactive
Rebecca Black - Friday

I also scrapped the dance portion of the lesson in lieu of showing them an episode of Glee, if they choose not to have the singing competition. The teacher gave me the list of students and they're surprisingly a mixed bag of tricks. I don't think the one or two boys attending will be interested in that part so having the nuclear option of showing a popular TV show is okay. Also I found korean subtitles for it.

Thanks for the great idea! Here's an elementary version. I made a worksheet for the students to score and write one sentence for each video. Pretty basic. I selected 8 songs both appropriate and interesting for my kiddos. The songs are listed on the worksheet, slide 1.

Slide 2 is just for a demonstration to show how to score and write their sentence.
