Great lesson. Terrific ppt and worksheets. Look forward to using this in my after-school class. They could use a fun lesson after some of the heavier stuff we've been doing lately.

I can't open it since my school computers  don't support that version of PPT ... do you have a compatible version for Windows XP????  I think 2007.  If so, can you post it for me????????

Saved it in an older version of PPT. You might have to alter/fix some of the screens due to the version change.

been doing this lesson with my HS kids this week because they have midterms next week.

It's been going down well. I edited it a bit and cleaned up the powerpoint. I also updated the info about the American Idols judges to reflect who will be judging in 2014. At the end of the info on American Idol I showed them the clip of the 20 worst American Idol performances ever.

I used completely different music videos. There's no K-Pop in the lesson at all now. The videos I chose, I did so specifically because they are funny, weird, wacky, or are considered iconic music videos.

There are 9 videos listed in the lesson in total, but we only managed to get through 4 in each class. I tried out all of the them, and the first 4 in the PPT are the ones that got the best reactions from the students. The remaining 5 are listed in random order in the PPT. Of course feel free to change around the order if you want

I also made one slight change to the worksheet - instead of having the band members birthdays, I simply changed that part to "Date the band started".

yes i admit there isn't much diversity, most of the songs are rock/indie too. the reason i chose those videos though was because they consistently appear on lists of "top 100 music videos of all time," or "top 30 music videos ever" etc. i wasn't really aiming for diversity here but rather to just show them interesting videos that are considered classics (the actual videos, not the songs). unfortunately there are some female singers on those lists but not many.

as for blink-182 - i teach all-boys high school. i checked that video with my co-teacher and she said it was fine for them. i wouldn't have shown it to 1st grade middle school girls though. of course any videos you want to show your classes should ideally be pre-screened by yourself to make sure they're appropriate.

Okay, so it got dragged out over the last week before midterms and the week and a half after midterms, but I've now done this with all of my middle school grades 1-2 classes. They love it! 

I simplified the PowerPoint a bit. Basically I want to get them thinking about music audition programs, and then show them how to judge the videos.

I write everything on the board (the artist name, date, etc.), and make sure they copy it correctly.

After watching the video, I have them yell out scores which I write on the board. Then I ask them what they liked about the video and write 3 comments on the board.

I don't go on to the next video until they have all written everything on their paper. My higher level classes figure it out quickly and don't need much help, my lower level classes need a lot of help...

If I get started right at the beginning of class, I can just make it through 4 videos in a class. I picked videos that have been popular in the US over the last year or so.

I like the idea of this lesson, but I've got a question about the edits. Why even talk about American Idol if you're just going to be showing highly produced music videos? The kids might know a difference, but the singers on American Idol are amateurs and these music videos are not. I'll be removing the first few slides about AI before I show this to my kiddos.

they talk about American Idol because the students must act like judges, like on American Idol. take it out if you want dude, no-one's stopping you.

Thanks, an answer to my question was what I was seeking. It seemed disconnected to me, so I asked a question. God forbid someone has a typo.

So turns out my 3rd graders are super stone faced and hardcore critics about the videos I chose. They thought Taylor was boring, Florida Georgia Line was so so and I didn't get to all the videos. They loved Eminem but also liked All of Me. The words they used to describe it was "sweet" and "lovely".

After speaking with my coteacher we decided that I'd change one or two of the videos also added to the introduction about an Korean American Idol like show called Superstar K. She said that the kids might be more receptive if they have a video or two they can relate to. So I've changed out one or two videos and now my lineup is as follows:

Ylvis - The Fox
Eminem - Not Afraid
Ariana Grande - Problem (replaced Taylor Swift)
John Legend - All of Me
Pentatonix - Radioactive
Rebecca Black - Friday

I also scrapped the dance portion of the lesson in lieu of showing them an episode of Glee, if they choose not to have the singing competition. The teacher gave me the list of students and they're surprisingly a mixed bag of tricks. I don't think the one or two boys attending will be interested in that part so having the nuclear option of showing a popular TV show is okay. Also I found korean subtitles for it.
