Aloha all,

So essentially I was inspired by this video (see below) to do a lesson on 'Talent.' With some messing around during time before class I found out most of my class knew who Susan Boyle was and it got me thinking as to what else they know about...

I already have a lesson in my head but I'm struggling with an end activity. I'm aiming to introduce new words such as juggler/acrobat/mime/ etc. and I'm thinking of showing the kids videos of such performances and getting them to be the judges of which they like the most. I was thinking of creating a big cross or tick on the back of their worksheets and they hold it up accordingly at the end of each video to judge them. It'll be a fun activity but just seems a bit weak on the actual teaching side - I'll ask the opinions of the kids but with the lower classes it'll be like pulling teeth.

Ideally I'd get the kids to show off a talent of their own, but alas I think half my classes would be too shy - Even when prodded with peppero. Hopefully I'll have something up on here later this afternoon.

I was going to show my kids this video clip today.  But i'm afraid they already know who Choi, Sung-Bong is.

If it matters at all, I've been showing it all week as a time filler and none of the classes have seen it or knew who he was. 

Edit: I should probably add that I teach middle school students

I was just talking with my co-teacher about this and she mentioned a few other names that I didn't know.

Paul Potts (another Britians Got Talent contestant) is apparently pretty well known in Korea becuase he has come several times. I had no idea who he was. Now I do. Amazing.

She said 백청강 is another surprise talent, I searched him but my Korean isn't good enough to get me very far, sorry..

There is also Huh Gak (허각).

Great idea for a lesson. I might hop on board too. I think my kids would really like it.

So I've taught this already to 2-3 classes and it's gone pretty well so far. It's far from perfect but it's a good lesson in all. It's also a lesson you can have some great fun with - I'm making it my personal mission to find a video that they like more than Choi's singing (KGT) video!

First 10 minutes

Get them to explain in English what talent is - I normally get 'ability' 'skilled' stuff like that. Ask if talent means you are good or bad at something, they all know it's good. Introduce the idea of being 'gifted' and explain

Run through the pictures - Get the lower classes to read as a class. Draw a spider diagram with some talents they can think of (juggling, fire breathing, painting etc.) which will help with the writing exercise

10 minutes

Ask how you get talented - One kid explained "from your mother and father" which is a great of saying being born with talent...(might change my .ppt) Talentless celebs they kinda draw a blank (any other suggestions here?)

Ask who can be talented...this is a great place to ask the class if anyone can juggle etc. I showed them a weird thing I can do by holding my hands together whilst twisting them over my head (hard to explain >.<) I have a big bag of lollipops from Costco that I show as a bribe. One of my afterschool kids said she was talented at eating lollipops...so I got her to put 10 in her mouth at once. I got a hilarious video and she then shared the lollipops with the rest of the class...

5-10 Minutes

Writing exercise - Get them to write about people they actually know. Encourage silly things...I got a lot of Mark Teacher is talented at nothing/My father is talented at drinking. Stuff like that

The last 15-20 Minutes

Introduce the Judges slide - Ask what they do (decide who wins etc.) Show them videos!
 
At the end of every video I would ask what they were talented at, whether they liked it and got them to give it a score out of  10. The higher classes I also got them to write a sentence about each and then choose their favourite - The highest rated one would be played again at the end of the class (if there was time.)

Another note... when you show videos, it's good to alternate actually good ones with bad ones, funny ones, singing ones, because the boys get bored with the singing ones, but the girls request them.

I used this guy (but not this particular video) in a lesson on proverbs: "You can't judge a book by its cover."
