American Football
« on: June 12, 2011, 10:21:34 PM »
I set out to try and introduce this sport which is so popular in the US but is largely unseen in other countries.  I discovered it is a fairly complicated sport to explain to someone who has never seen it.  However I tried to include the major terms to at least begin laying down a foundation.

How did they do with this lesson?

I thought it looked fairly complicated, no matter what English level you're dealing with. I would have no idea how to describe what a DB actually does so that it makes sense to them.

That being said, I do plan on showing my class Remember the Titans to introduce a bit of football and the idea of racism into class.. it's also a Disney feel good movie so it'll likely work out well.

Here's a similar, very very simplified football ppt I used during Super Bowl season 2010.  Instead of doing a whole lesson, though, we made football into the game used at the end of a 6th grade class.

We made a football field out of cardboard and used a printout of a football.  Divide the class into two teams, then ask questions to each team.  If the team gets it right, they move forward 10 yards.  If wrong, they move back 10 yards.

Hello
Being that I recently relocated to Korea - does anybody recommend an area - or an area and a place - to possibly watch American Football - that is if there is still a season.

Sam Ryans in Itaewon always shows reruns the day after. It's fun to go up on Monday night and watch your team play. If you avoid the internet, you can have a real "Monday Night Football" experience. Pretty fun, usually a lot of foreigners there during the season.

Is a good video for advanced classes. There's a few iffy words in there, like "badass" but I just let it go without making it an issue and none of the students even noticed. Subtitles seem to be pretty accurate.
