High School - Cooking and Recipes

This one is really easy and has very minimal teacher participation once it gets going.

I go through the powerpoint and do some review with the students on cooking utensils such as pots, bbqs, frying pans, etc and basic cooking terms such as boil, grill, etc.

I show them a simple example recipe and then have them get into groups and create their own recipe for anything they want. I tell them to keep it simple, so usually they do a lot of bibimbap and kimbap and some desserts and pizza.  I give them about 20 or so minutes to do this, sometimes it takes them longer because they always want to draw a picture. I then have them read their recipes to the class.

It is important that you have them come to you with questions. I walk around and glance at their recipes to make sure they are using the proper words. Instead of put the peanut butter on the bread, use the word spread, etc.

I actually picked one of their recipes and made it at my house and took a picture of me eating it and they were so happy when I showed the it the next week!

haha, yeah i realized that yesterday, but my comp was too slow to upload a new one. im gonna get to it today. oh well!

This is a former lesson about cooking and recipes posted by Mandolyn (she got it from a previous post, but was unsure who). I like this lesson, because I really love to cook.  So, instead of adding random pictures, I changed and added food that I normally cook in Korea.  Also, I added pictures of the Chuseok dinner I had this year with friends.  This gives an idea of how I eat (other Westerners as well from America and etc.) compared to Korean foods. 

Here are the main goals and objectives:

1. To teach cooking vocabulary
2. To teach students how to follow steps and follow directions
3. To allow students to work/collaborate in groups in sharing ideas about traditional Korean cooking translating to English

I'm showing the original slides up to the peanut butter sandwich, and then we are going to go over how to make a grilled ham and cheese sandwich.  Most kids are familiar with this sandwich as they all are fans of Isaac Toast in Korea as a quick snack/meal.

Then, I'm going to go over a few Korean dishes.  They include, Bibimbap, Pajeon, Dak Galbi, Kimchi Jjigae, and choose your own (more advanced learners).  With these dishes, a group of students will pull a recipe at random, and they will write the ingredients and recipe.  The teacher will help me translate the vocabulary, and I will also aid them by making a list of the ingredients on the board.  Most household recipes for these dishes vary, so I'm going on complete guidance by the teacher and students, even though I know what most of these dishes contain in them as ingredients.  Then the groups are going to share their recipes with the class. 

The remaining pictures on the slide show my recipes that I love to cook in Korea.  So, the students can ask me questions.  The last slide is silk worm larvae soup! So, they can give me input on the ingredients in the soup, but this is only for reaction purposes only :-)

Looks like a great plan. For my winter camp we had a week of English cooking. so much!

i like this lesson because i have a conversation class that i meet twice a week, which are the same students i see in my other enlgish classes so this gives me a great opportunity to do something fun with them thats NOT in the book :)

Here's another lesson I put together.

Brainstorm Korean food (stuff they could theoretically make, like bibimbap, kimbap, samgetang, ddeokbokki, ramyeon, etc), go through the presentation and get them to write down a recipe. At the end, get them to present.
