I was hesitant to teach the lesson since I had some co-teachers overreact to the "violence" of the zombie lesson I taught at my boy/girl academic high school last year, but it's been pretty much nothing but rave reviews from students and co-teachers alike as I've used this lesson. I'm so thrilled and relieved!
The girls are really getting into the analysis and team negotiation about who to choose, and some have come up with some interesting solutions I decided to give bonus points to (example: "The witch can make a bigger boat with magic so we can all go!" or "I kill Doctor and teacher and take all medicine and money"). I've had to cut off the really good analysis and argument part at the end since I have textbook content to cover in the first part of class, but since I'm working with high school students they can go a little faster with the remaining content anyway.
Haha, the guys are mainly concerned with whether or not there are still any "sexy girls" alive on Jeju. Sheesh... hormones. ::) I've had several boys' classes wail in dismay when I tell them Ms. Lee is pregnant...
If you need ideas to make the lesson a little shorter, try letting the students only write the pros and cons for the 4 people they want to save. They're still writing, thinking critically, and reinforcing the lesson, and everyone gets to the competitive part faster.
