Lesson 5: Different Places, Different Houses
« on: June 28, 2010, 04:43:00 PM »
This was my first attempt at a ppt.
It was developed for a MS lesson on Different Places/Different Houses.
I have benefited from the many lessons posted here and wanted to give something back.
I hope it is useful to someone else, feel free to change it up as you wish.

Cheers!

This is a great lesson.  Do you have the materials for the word search and the game?

Here is the word search and answers, plus the clues/bonus cards for the game
The word search was made using the site - armoredpenguin.com. It's easy to use for any word search or crossword puzzles.

I made a powerpoint that is based around Are you interested in.... and What are you interested in? I concentrated on jobs and careers. I haven't come up with an actvity yet, but the powerpoint might help spark so ideas.

Hey Canoe?

What do you actually teach in that lesson? Is it basically about vocabulary?
I loved the ppt and the houses you found are really interesting.
But, erm, I just don't get what you are trying to teach in that lesson?

Hey Prshown!

I liked your ppt! I think I will have to use it!

My idea for an acitivity is a job interview. I haven't really thought this through yet! (the idea just popped into my head now lol)

Why not get half the students to be interviewing for a job and the other half the boss. The boss can ask "Are you interested in" style questions. Maybe give different Boss students different jobs to interview the others for?

@ Exodus

The interview activity is a great idea. I also tried to play a game last year where I pinned names of occupations on the back of each student and they had to ask questions to figure out who they were, but there was a lot of cheating and little success asking questions. If you can figure out a way to make it work it might be a fun activity to do. OR if you have higher level students that follow directions well.

The idea for an interview is a good idea. But I was thinking maybe a magazine interview. I will give them certain questions to ask using the stuff in the book theyve learnt, then they must think of some of thier own too. They can do this in pair (so two students gather information about each other) write it all down.

Then for the lower levels they should just read the dialogue out loud. Maybe the higher students could write a short article using the information?

Do you think this could work. Any contributions would be great.

I will try and remember to save them in the older form as well, but you can update your PowerPoint. Just google it and you can find how to do it.

This links to an activity posted by Knicknack and it is about the right job for you. I think it might go well with PRSHOWN's powerpoint about interests and jobs. It's the 10th one down.

I taught my very first class today! I did the communication task of a dream house on page 73 of the textbook. Students didn't really like it.

My co-teacher told me to think of another activity.

But I'm stumped. Any suggestions for an end of class activity that is house related?

Here's my ppt for page 71 part c.  It's pretty minimal because I only used it to explain the game. I went over the dialogs and different kinds of houses, then we played MASH (Mansion, Apartment, Shack, or House- in case you don't know- totally awesome old school game that defined my childhood).
Then after they all had their answers, they had to write a paragraph about what they "want" in the future and a few had to read them out loud.

The kids all really seemed to like it.

Oh- and I had printed out quarter sheets of the MASH layout (same as in ppt) for each student.

I literally just flipped through this chapter in my book. The first thing that came to mind was, MTV cribs, probably the teen version since they won't show their sex swings and fridges full of champagne and beer. I think I might try to find a suitable clip to show them before I ask them to think of and draw their own dream house. It might help spark their creativity.

I showed them Akon's house. The end of it, they asked, "Why does he have no hair?"  -.-

Hey guys~ I finished up my prezi for this last night. I used a good portion of canoe's powerpoint for the beginning and then went on to really hit the key phrases for the lesson.  Some videos added in there as well. Hope you enjoy~!

This is my first lesson on the chapter. It uses the power point posted above along with an activity about which is the job for you. The activity has gone over really well as the students love seeing the funny jobs in the end. Enjoy!

I also showed Akon's house and Mariah Carey's house (I teach all girls so I thought the giant salon and closet would get some oohs and awes) I showed short clips of each and during Akon's tour, they kept asking, "Obama's brother? Usher? Who is that?!"
