(YBM Si-Sa) Grade 3, Lesson 10 - "How Many Pencils?"
« on: June 24, 2011, 04:43:55 PM »
Hello folks, just a couple of things here - a quick practice / review PPT and game (the game is unnecessarily complicated imo but that's not my fault - you can change it up whatever way) plus a mario game - well done to whoever made the template.

Pretty simple activity but this worked well with all my classes and it gets all the students speaking English. Students had to ask each other the target questions and respond appropriately. Prior to the activity we drilled the seven questions. I made clear to them that they had to ask a different person for each question (by saying no Park Ji-Sung, Park Ji-Sung, Park Ji-Sung etc, instead Park Ji-Sung, Kim Yuna, Lee Myung Bak etc). Once the students have different names for the "Yes, I do" column get them to find people for the "No, I don't". If you have really bright students they can then ask people from the Yes I do column, "how many....?". We finished with a Mario game PPT.

Apologies if the formatting is out, I created it using Open Office.

I'm going to use this very hungry caterpillar story by eric carle and ask counting questions - how many apples?  how many oranges?  etc

Also - Does anyone have any brilliant where's waldo type searching handouts?  They would be awesome for this lesson...  How many pencils can you find in the picture, etc....  anyone?  anyone?

Halloween Game template. I'll have to keep the volume down so it doesn't scare them next week.

Here's a powerpoint and halloween board game for part 2, but it can be used for another part.

Students learn the new vocabulary and review words.
Then practice the new expressions.
After this they move on to the text book activities.
And, finally play a Halloween board game.

Here's a introductory and review powerpoint I made for this lesson (I used it in period one but could be modified for others).  We used the last slide as a quick "treasure hunt" game to test their listening - in groups at their tables, they would have to find a certain number of pencils, pencil cases, erasers, rulers, hats, bags based on the numbers I gave - "I have three pencil cases" etc.  The first team to have all items on their desk wins the game!

Does it bother anyone else that this lesson is so wrong???  I don't know about anyone else, but when I ask someone how much they have of something I don't say "How many_______?"  I ask "How many _______do you have?" or "How many ____are there."  My co-teacher says it's easier for them to say, which is true but it's not correct English!

Who makes these books??? And if they get English speaking people to help them, why don't they fix these things??

I totally know what you mean! I taught them to say "How many do you have?" even if the chapter teaches differently.
