Last Class - Movie
« on: July 09, 2010, 08:43:51 AM »
It has been a long semester, and I want to find some tv show or movie to play for my 5th grade students. Ideally, I will do a short easy lesson and then finish the class with a 20 minute or so video. There will be no Korean teacher in the class to translate at all, so I need something at a very basic level, but interesting enough to keep 5th graders attention. Any ideas?

I recommend Wall-e. There is hardly any talking and you can stop it and ask the children what is happening in the movie. I did a powerpoint before the movie with key words like plant, space, and earth. Both my elementary and middle school loved it.

Thanks, that will be perfect. It buffers really slow, but I'm sure I can find a copy of it over the weekend to download. I have never seen it, so now I have something to do today in my office!

You could also check out your local public library.  Most of them have a pretty decent selection of English movies and have the option for Korean subtitles.  Ususally you can rent them for two weeks.  Just make sure it's a movie that you'll enjoy.  Seeing the same one over and over is driving me crazy.

Wallace & Gromit videos are great for this case. Simple English and most are 30 minutes or less. You can find a number of them for download on David's site http://eflclassroom.ning.com/

Our school has The Magic School Bus collection. It has Korean subtitles if you need it. Kids enjoy that too :)

There are a handful of booths near Yongsan Electronics market that sell, among other things, kidvids in English with Korean subtitles.  The quality varies widely, but I just finished showing Lilo & Stitch in English with Korean subtitles.  They got to hear English, understand the story, and learn something about an American culture (Hawai'ian, in this case).

This might be a little late but it has worked wonders for my low-level middle school boys this week.
Go to mtv.com and find an episode of silent library. Here is the work sheet I made for season 3, episode 1. They absolutely loved it!

Oh and I should add, I actually got this idea from someone on the web. Most likely, from somewhere on this site but my memory isn't quite perfect...

Two movies that I like are Dumbo and Tarzan.  Both show a great deal with visuals, so only English subtitles are necessary.  The music in Tarzan is also a plus.  Mulan and Brother Bear have also worked well for me.  For something more modern with 5th and 6th Graders, the Hannah Montana Movie is nice and Richard Rodriguez's _Shorts_ from last summer had some nice turns.  There's another thread here on the virtues of not using Korean Subtitles.

Thanks for the idea. I made a simple powerpoint to go along with it for my low level 5th/6th.
Are there other sites that show full episodes? My students loved the show, but our school's internet connection is poor, so the streaming kept freezing up.  :(

I noticed a thread for teachers looking for this. Is this still available anywhere or can you send it if you're still around?
