I had to make up questions for a Golden Bell type contest for my school's English Day. I was on here looking for a list of questions... but I couldn't find any. So, I thought I'd upload the ones I've made just in case someone else out there is in the same situation. I had to come up with these really quick. And I was hoping that there would be someone on waygook to help speed up the process. But, there wasn't. I hope this will help someone else.

There is nothing special about these questions, but they are intended for my middle school students.

I have an unfortunately scheduled camp this weekend, the weekend after my return trip from a visit home (that one week when all I want to do is get through with my head down to the weekend so I can sleep? Yeah, camp that weekend. Dammit).

Just out of curiosity - what is a "Godlen Bell" question?

I'm new at teaching here in Korea and I'd like to know in case I run into something like this.

Golden Bell is a type of quiz show on tv in Korea. My ct insisted I play Golden Bell with my kids last fall and I had no idea what it was.

Basically you make a list of questions from easy to difficult. Have the kids line up their chairs in striaght lines. The kids all have white boards, you ask a question and they write down the answer. They show you their answers and everyone who got the answer right gets to stay in and everyone who go the answer wrong is out and goes to stand on the side. When it gets down to a couple students left, you throw in an easy redemption question and everyone who is out gets to write an answer, too. If they get it right, they're back in. When it nears the end of class (or however much time you have) make the questions harder until you only have one student left. They are your Golden Bell winner!

I had a whole list of questions, but I can't find them right now. If I find them later, I'll post them.

For those who are unfamiliar, Golden Bell is a long-running education/quiz-based variety show in Korea. Contestants (students) are eliminated through stages of questions with the hopes of reaching the Golden Bell challenge question. If they answer the question correctly they are awarded a scholarship. There was a entertainer version called Star Golden Bell, which ran until about last year when it was cancelled. Most Korean kids will be familiar with it.

Golden Bell is very popular around here, I had to do one at a neighbouring high school as sort of an "MC" during their English Day and the kids really liked it...I'm doing a few at my school this year (I get to play more games and teach less from the book...w00t!)

Would your kids understand a lot of what you have in there? Mine are at a such low level that most of the questions in the original .doc file would be over their heads :( But I do like that ck.or.kr link...I'm definitely going to use those questions!!!

Here is my Golden Bell. Its about 130 questions and I made it with my Co-teachers so the students should be able to understand...

This style of game can be difficult to use in class. Students that are eliminated early can get restless.

Instead of elimination, I have students start at the back of the room and move forward with each correct answer. When a student reaches the front, he or she gets a piece of candy. This will keep everyone involved the entire time, and even low level students can still earn a reward.

If you want to make it more competitive, give out special prizes for the kids that reach the front the most. So low level kids will get a couple pieces of candy, mid level kids will get few, and the highest level kids will get a special prize.

If you find you are giving out too much candy, increase the number of trips it takes to earn a piece. For example, every three trips from back to front earn a piece of candy.

If you don't have room to move around, seat the students in groups. Award a point to a team for every correct answer, with similar rewards. For example, ten points can be redeemed for a piece of candy, and the winning group gets a special prize.

Golden Bell is usually fun! A few tips:

(1) Start with easy questions to get everyone involved.

(2) Repeat the question/clue, speak slowly and clearly, and try to eliminate similar but incorrect answers in the question.

(3) In the instructions specify your procedure: e.g. repeat question twice, then 5,4,3,2,1 Board's Up! You can do a practise round.

(4) Find a way to get eliminated people back in, or play twice. Some excellent ideas above.

(5) Don't be afraid to give hints if students are struggling, e.g. first letter or number of letters. I insist on correct spelling usually.

(6) Prizes for top students!

I also was asked to make some Golden Bell questions, so first THANK YOU so much for your ideas.

Here are 13 questions that I gave me school. Some are strait up copied from earlier posts on this page (Again thank you!), some are inspired by them but written differently, and one or two I came up with after my creative juices finally started flowing (at the quick quick speed of malaise
