(YBM Si-Sa) Grade 3, Lesson 7 - "Jump! Jump!"
« on: July 11, 2011, 03:36:47 pm »
These two activities should keep my third graders busy during our first two classes.

The first is a great introduction worksheet that Sheila made for last year's book (and lesson 5). It's a commands based lesson, so I just modified it ever so slightly.

I was also thinking, "hmmm, this would be a great lesson to play simon says with." lo and behold, here's a slight edit of mokpo brad's simon says from the older book. thanks you two!

Here is an Intro PPT with dogs!

Hello everyone!
My school is pretty high level and my do-teacher decided that I should focus on action verbs for this unit.  Here is an action verb ppt, (modified from somewhere else on this site)  an opposite action verb ppt, and a worksheet to go with them.  I also made flashcards for each word. I'm going to print off 2 sets of flashcards for small groups and play a matching game or snap with my students. Enjoy!
Carla

Here is a Simon Says' powerpoint I made for my students.  First I teach them the vocabulary on the powerpoint, and then I show them how to play simon says. Simple ppt, but hopefully someone can use it. :)

Using carla's ppt for action verbs and flashcards, here are some game ideas I have been playing with my kids that have been going over really well. Best part is that they are all virtually prep free (once u print off a few flashcards) and the kids really enjoyed them.

1) Simon Says (obvious)

2) Flashcard slap with partners or on the board

3) Charades Telephone - Use Carla's ppt and insert a blank slide in between each slide. Put the students into groups of 5 or so and then they all stand in a line facing the back of the room (or away from wherever you show the slide). The last person in line turns around and looks at the slide/picture. Change the slide to a blank slide and then the student will tap the person in front of them on the shoulder, act out the word for a few seconds, then stop. The second student then proceeds to tap the next student and act out what they saw. This goes until the last person in line, where they must guess what the word is.

4) Speed charades - I tell each team to pick one captain. 1 at a time the captains will come up and act out a stack of action words as fast as they can. However, only their team can guess/answer. The team with the fastest time wins. I let them play 1 round, then pick a new captain and play a second round. I take the fastest time (or u can add up the times...whatevs)

5) Dual! - I have 2 teams pick 3 people from their group to come up to the front of the class. They stand in seperate single file lines facing each other. I hand the first person in each line a stack of action flashcards. I count down 3-2-1-DRAW! and they have to put a flashcard on their forehead. The first person to identify the flashcard on their opponent's forehead is the winner. They go to the back of the line and the next two dual. After all 3 have gone, The winner is the best 2 out of 3. I play elimination tournament style. The kids REALL got into this one, strategizing who should go against who and what card they thought their opponent might not know.

Will post some more ideas after i finish lesson planning this weekend! Enjoy!

Here is a PPT script for the "Look and Speak" part of the lesson. My co-teacher wanted to do it as a role-play, so I put this together for the students to practice. I know the picture of "Andy's Mom" is a different Andy's Mom, but I didn't have anything else to use, haha.

Here is a PPT for the Pinocchio roleplay. The textbook DVD-ROM doesn't work on my Mac, so I used pictures from Disney's Pinocchio instead.

I used the "face Race" game today in my classes but i modified it a bit because some of the students were feeling left out..

Used: paper, marker, dice, and the board
Dice: 1=eyes. 2=nose. 3=mouth. 4=ears. 5=hair. and 6=eye brows

Kids were in groups of four, each group having a piece of paper, marker, and dice.

One students from each group came to the front, I did an action, and all of the students at the front had to tell me what i was doing. Once they all did, they got to run back to their table roll the dice and  draw the part of the face.

we did 8 different rounds, and at the end the kids came up to the front and explained their "monster-looking"  faces. there were no winners or losers (my co-teacher said it was too hurtful to the kids).

it seemed like the kids were having a lot of fun with little pressure..

Pass the ball game is really good.
I used the game yesterday. my students loved the game so much.
Thanks a lot :D

Action verbs is really helpful.
Let's do voca practice and make some sentences.
The class will be very active.

I used the activity verbs' PPT. It was wonderful.
I write them down on paper.
Then, I let students play "speed game"
I'm sure everybody understand how to play the speed game.
Some students couldn't understand the written words, so better to show pictures instead of only words.
It works well.
