This is a senses lesson I've done with my 3rd graders (all boys). It went over quite well and got just about everyone involved - even the slackers and the ones that tend to sleep in the back. It does take a bit of prep on your end, and a little cash investment, but I had other classes requesting it. It was a nice tie-in for chapter 7 of Christian H. Kim - Amy's first korean food
The focus is on smell and taste and how to describe food according to these senses. The beginning of the lesson introduces the basic vocabulary, with a quick gap-fill practice. The main portion of the lesson is dedicated to a blind tasting. I chose ten foods of various tastes and had two students smell/taste/describe each before they tried to guess what it was that they were eating. The rest of the class could see on the screen what their classmate was going to be subjected to and usually got a good kick out of seeing their friends having to eat garlic, lemons, bondaegi, etc. Obviously you can choose just about anything you want.
Like I said, it takes a bit of prep and a couple of won on your part, but I think for the entertainment value alone it was worth it. Also, turns out that Korean teenage boys HATE cucumber. To the point I think one of them lied about having an allergy to avoid having to eat it.
Anyway, enjoy!!
