Chuseok and Thanksgiving ppt/crossword/wordsearch
« on: September 14, 2010, 03:18:05 PM »
Well, we're winding down for Chuseok, so it's time for a foreign-culture lesson at my school. This lesson compares American Thanksgiving to Chuseok. It's starts with oversimplified version of the fairytale rendition of Thanksgiving that was crammed down my throat until high school. Then, it looks at foods, which is the most exciting part for the students. Enjoy explaining gravy to the kids...they just keep saying 기름 in surprised and terrified voices. Convincing them that a turkey is different than a chicken also requires some patience. At the end, there's a list of topics to make a Venn diagram for Chuseok and Thanksgiving, but this year I'm more about the crossword for high levels and the word search for low levels. I've used this at Thanksgiving time too, but I think the kids are more into the spirit around Chuseok.

Thank you for sharing this great lesson.I planned to do this lesson soon, so this will assist me.I will also be including some of the work i do in the schools mid-term exams, so I think the quiz at the end of your ppt would be perfect :).The worksheets are also very good, so I could possibly also draw some exam questions from that.I actually wanted to include a short dialogue, maybe have the kids chat about the differences & similarities between Thankgiving and chuseok.Does any1 have any other suggestions on dialogue ideas for this topic?

Thanks again for sharing these materials. :D

Oh my goodness I was in such a bind this morning!  The Chuseok lesson I was planning tanked horribly and I needed to make a fast change DURING that class.

Your ppt saved me! Thank you so much for a lesson that can be used 'as-is'!

This was a lifesaver. My co-teacher just walked up and asked me to do a lesson plan on Thanksgiving/Chuseok after I had been finishing up on another lesson plan...gotta love that. XD

Why am I not able to open these with microsoft word 2003? Can anyone else open them? does it have something to do with my word being in Korean?

Thank you so much for this.  I was looking for a good way to tie in Thanksgiving and Chuseok (as per the request of my co-teachers), and this ppt plus the exercises look like a perfect class (or two?) for my students.  Much appreciated.

Much thanks for this. This will serve as a great lesson for those two days the week of Chuseok.

Hey- I'm using a 2011 Macbook Air... I only have Keynote on it, no PowerPoint. I never had trouble viewing PowerPoints before, but now this one won't open. Is anyone else using a mac to view the files and know how I can fix it? It just says: "An unknown error occurred"

I changed this to suit my needs and materials I already wanted to show the students.  My students are mixed level 2nd grade MSers. This required some explanation (and classroom management) from my coteacher.

If you have any, you should replace my pictures with your own thanksgiving ones :D
I also got a short (20 second) clip to show Thanksgiving and Football

my students always need some sort of pick-me-up in the middle of class..I use videos of Simon Says..

I included a Monster's INC game I found somewhere on waygook.. It has mostly questions about Thanksgiving and some stuff from a previous lesson (Darwin Awards)

the 1st and 3rd "Chuseok Thanksgiving Lesson" are the same. I don't know how to delete one of them. :(

Thanks, this is great! Just modified the game a little bit (took out some of the non-Chuseok/Thanksgiving related questions), and combined some parts of both of those PPT's that were posted here. Hope this is useful! Will be using this for my three classes today.

I'm from the UK and ignorantly know very little about thanksgiving... except what I've learned from friends. So the kids and I are gonna learn something!

Thank you!

This is all excellent material!  However, I'm planning to show my kids a clip of American football, since they've got pretty much no clue what it is.  I'm not sure how to go about explaining it to them (or even if I should, since it would probably bore them out of their minds).  Does anyone have an idea of a play or set of downs on video that they would be able to enjoy?

My contribution.

I'm an Aussie, but I liked the idea of comparing Korean and American thanksgiving.

I drew a table on whiteboard and then let students stick the "Chuseok food pictures" to the correct place using magnets.

Cheers
