I wrote a Java program for how to tell time. It includes:
1) "All Time" which when you hit the answer button, should give you the correct sentence.
5:52 a.m. = "It is five fifty-two in the morning"
2) "Quarter to or Half Past" should give you the correct sentence using "quarter after" "quarter to" or "half past".
9:15 = "It is a quarter after nine"
3) "After, Before, To" should give you the correct sentence for "after" or "before".
7:03 = "It is three after seven"
5:51 = "It is nine before six"
4) "Approximate Time" is only programmed with __ o'clock, but you can tell your students you can use it for other times. This one is VERY useful for conversation since pretty much nobody says "It's four 'o' three" or "It's three after four" for 4:03, but will instead say "It's about four o'clock."
6:54 = "It is about seven o'clock."
You guys can try it out here:
http://elzoog.com/jTellTime/launch.jnlp
If you open it in Windows, it should ask you if you want to open it with the "Java(TM) Web Start Launcher"
Let me know if
1) You have any suggestions for improvements.
2) You find any errors or bugs.
3) You know some Java yourself and want to see the source code.
Unfortunately, it was compiled using the latest Sun compiler, so it doesn't work in linux if you open it with the OpenJDK web starter.

I like to incorporate telling time with days of the week and dates. It obviously depends on the level (I work with elementary). Here is a handout I prepared that serves as the basis for a 'Days of the week, Time and Date' lesson.
I'm also including a lesson plan I found under the intermediate thread that is helpful in teaching quarter past, half past and quarter to. In also has a worksheet for telling time. For the date section I created a worksheet for special days, i.e. "Peppero day is...." and so forth.
For low level students I use the very popular "What's the time Mr. Wolf" PPT and song. I've attached them here.

Here is a worksheet I made today to accompany 'What's the time Mr. Wolf'. It's a listening and writing exercise; while the students listen to the song, they have to fill in the gaps in the worksheet. I also included empty analog clocks for each section for them to complete.

Time is relatively quick lesson to teach, but finding ways of reinforcing the use of it is somewhat of a challenge. This game is definitely one that the kids enjoy playing, especially at an all boys school. Thanks

I have to teach this lesson today. My students really like to play Mr. Wolf, Mr. Wolf, what time is it? If you haven't tried that game yet, you should give it a try. Thanks for the ppt's!
