Alphabet Lessons/Resources
« on: March 07, 2010, 06:20:58 PM »
I cooked up this workbook for an afterschool class I have without a co-teacher. I may as well be speaking in tongues for as much as the kids understand. I print these out doublesided on B4 (WHen you run it through the Xerox you just need to put the same paper in face-up to print on the back) and staple it down the middle like a book. Good way to chew up 30-40 minutes a day :)

My co-teachers wanted me to teach a class of second graders the alphabet, five letters per each class.  Here is the powerpoint I used.  I'd have them say the letter name, and the sound it made, and then practice those letters with the different picture examples on each slide.
I'd have them practice writing the uppercase and lowercase letters (Big A and Little a).
For more practice we'd play matching/memory games: Find the matching uppercase and lowercase letters among a bunch of face down flashcards.
Or speed games: See which kid can smack the letter you name the most quickly with a novelty oversized rubber hammer.

Maybe I am totally lost but how do you put it together? I have been thrown into a daycare class where the students have absolutely zero english ability. Ha but I don't it speaks for my intelligence level that I'm having trouble assembling the book..

This is a nice little workbook.
Only thing I'd recommend (if you wanted to have kids practice making the letters) is changing the font to Comic Sans MS or something that shows the letter "a" as an "a"

Otherwise the kids end up writing this really weird d-looking thing later on (although some can write it quite well)

Thanks.  I made prints of the A-L and my co-teacher was super impressed with it.  Good for the little kiddies to color and practice the letters.

I've got an after-school class of 1st & 2nd graders 2x/week, which I'm trying to develop a curriculum for, as I don't have a textbook or any other kind of guidance.  This is going to help so much! If you have any other ideas to throw my way, I'd love it.  Thanks!!

My kids loved the A-L book (as did my co-teacher).  Did you get a chance to find the M-Z book?  Thanks Gillod.

Ah, here it is! This one is NOT sized for B4, it's sized for A4.  I got lazy :)

Also, I'm glad your kids liked it. My kids are hellish little demons who ripped theirs to shreds

I definitely have hellish kids too.... but I'm lucky and have a co-teacher that will bring the hammer if they get too out of control.  Thanks again!

Shame... hate to bother again.  But The *.doc file is messed up on my computer.   For the A-L one I used the *.pdf file and it printed out great (On A4 actually).  Do you have the pdf file for M-Z?

Thanks a bunch Gillod!  Sorry to be sooo demanding.. ;D

The MZ book just needs you to change the margins.

In Word 2007...
1. 3rd tab 페이지 레이아옷
2. 3rd icon (paper with the margins drawn on it) 여백
3. 2nd option 좁게

Do that and it looks nice and pretty.

here's an alphabet song I did with my kids to help them with the alphabet.  We do the actions and sing it like a song.

Hi Gillod,

By chance did you convert the M-Z book into a PDF? The A-L book is so great and I would love to use the M-Z as well. I have no idea how to change it to that format.

Thanks so much for your help!

Lindsey

For after-school class. Depending on their level make them think of a certian number of words starting with that letter. Then play hangman!
