"Beauty" - HS Lesson
« on: September 29, 2010, 03:05:52 pm »
Hey All,

Here's the last lesson I planned for my high school girls. Going home next week! (Gulp!)

It is designed for an all-girl's classroom, but the ppt and lesson plan could easily be adjusted for a mixed gender or all-boys classroom. It went over really well with my students. I had several girls tell me afterward that it made a big impression on them. I think it's an important topic to discuss with teenagers as they get bombarded with "standards of beauty" by the popular media and are rarely given perspective on it. I hope it doesn't come across as preachy. In my two years here, I've just heard WAY too many of my HS students complain about their weight/face shape/nose shape/eye size/skin color etc. The popular Korean standard of what is beautiful for a woman is quite narrow, so I want to give them alittle perspective.

Lesson Plan
- Follow the ppt. The first two slides are there to generate students ideas, no right or wrong answers.
-Have them complete #2 on the worksheet and ask for a few student volunteers to give their answers. Start a list on the black board of qualities the students listed as making a woman "beautiful".
-Show them the dicitionary definition of Beatuy (PPT) discussing the influence of the media on this idea we have about what is beautiful.
-Show the "Evolution" Video (my students always asked to see it a second time)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYhCn0jf46U
-Explain the statement at the end of the video "No wonder our perception of beauty is distorted."
-The ppt powerpoint will guide you through some discussion of the motivation for this distortion.
- With 20-10 minutes left in the class, Have the students listen to the song "Video" by India Arie, following the lyrics on their handout. Ask them what they think the message of the song is.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mq86e4Fhja0&ob=av2e
- Go through the lyrics on the power point, take time to explain what each phrase means.
-If time, have students answer questions 7 and 8 on their own and as a class make a new list of "beatutiful Qualities" on the board to replace the list you made at the beginning.

The ppt is not quite complete: I didn't have time to get the last verse of the song on there, but I've never had enough time in the lesson to get through all the lyrics anyway so I never bothered to complete it.

Hi Lisa,

How long did this lesson take. I teach high school students and their levels are very mixed. This does seem like an awesome lesson to get them captivated though because lots of Koreans seem obsessed with how they look. I think it would be interesting, i'm just worried about running out of time.

excellent idea. i've wanted to do something with the dove real beauty ad for a while but hadn't figured out how to go about it. I've only been here a year but am so tired of these wonderful, smart, pretty young girls telling me their goals in life and including plastic surgery.

Awesome! I was thinking of having my students do a debate about plastic surgery in my HS Convo class (All girls as well) and this would be a great precursor! Thank you :)

Hi Dave -this lesson fills up a 50 minute class for me. My classes are also mixed. Give them a bit of time to do the first part of writing about a Korean woman and why she is beautiful, also taking this up can takeup some time if you have lots of students volunteering asnswers (maybe give out stickers or candy to the students who volunteer). I just take my time with defining words they don't know on the blackboard and explaining things clearly. For lower level students you could choose to do a vocabulary match sheet or something like that as there are quite a few words in the song that need additional explaining. You could also remove some words from the song and have the students fill in the missing words as they listen to the song, though I find this activity always takes up alot of time, usually the whole class.

My thoughts EXACTLY. It's a rewarding lesson, even though I do alot of the talking, because by the end of it I can see so many "lightbulbs" going on in their eyes!

Thanks so much Nancy, that means so much to me! I am packing up my desk now, but I will try to go through my lesson plans on my computer and post the rest of my stuff up on here, since I'm sure not going to need it anymore!

At the very end of the first post, there are two lines of blue text.  Click on them to download.  They are invisible if you are not logged in.

For those of you doing this lesson, as part of my tweaking for my class (after them repeatedly telling me that A) pre-photoshop girl looked liked me and 2)that the message of the video was that photoshop can make everyone beautiful), I added in another Dove video "Beauty" pressure that helped drive home the point a little bit more. As I said before, the lesson is great. I may change the music video over only because it was a bit lost on them although I got them to read the chorus over a couple times and two of them talked about it with me. It's post-exams now so they are all pretty much asleep no matter what!

I did this at my winter camp with a mixed class of middle schoolers, but instead of india.arie, I did with a cloze with Jesse McCartney's "Beautiful Soul" and followed up with a discussion about inner beauty.  The girls and boys separately made lists of what makes a person beautiful physically (to them) and what gives a person inner beauty (or what gives someone an "ugly soul," in the words of one of mu girls.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRV1GDuervE&feature=related

They loved the song, but didn't particularly care for the video. (Not enough dancing!)

Here's a Dove Evolutions type vid with an Asian model.  The girls and boys had the biggest reaction when the model's hair was altered.  It gets kind of long toward the end, I skipped ahead a bit.

Hi!

I used your lesson during my winter camp and I plan on using it again this semester. I teach girls so this was a huge success. Thanks for sharing  :)

Hey, I used this lesson and it was great!

I wanted to add my little variation. I used the opening credits from Korea's Next Top Model and America's Next Top Model as an opening and we discussed differences/similarities in the standards of beauty.

I loved this lesson. We did a lot of discussion and didn't use a song. instead i wanted to focus on other cultures [I showed them clips of other cultures, and then asked them what they thought, some of the videos were long, I just showed them clips and explained why the women dressed certain ways] so here is a post of my ever so small changes. Excellent lesson. I teach all girls and they loved it!
