High School - Facebook Lessons
« on: October 07, 2010, 09:49:48 am »
First Off .. I want to say I love this site! Just found it doing a google seach a few days ago. And I would like to put up some lessons that I have made or tailored from others. ^^

Here's my first Upload . I call it the facebook Lesson Plan. (You may want to change it up a bit to fit your classes).

In the end, I ask the students to sign up, and use a group page I have made to let them know about what we will be doing the following week or for what ever :)

There's also a video I have found through a general search on youtube.. (You can use Gomplayer to play it for sure) Make sure to change it from .avi to .flv

This is really good. I didn't think about using Facebook to inform my students about upcoming classes. Thanks for the idea.

Did you make up a separate account for yourself or did you keep your existing facebook profile?

How did the students take to the lesson? Was there much participation?

Sorry for asking so many questions but i am about to start this with my middle school students and I am wondering what people encountered when they did the lesson.

Creating a facebook page is a good hands on activity for them, and it's a good way to share resources. However, there are a lot of 'creepers', spammers, and lowlifes out there, as well as inappropriate content. If you're going to do this, I would address some points of caution - like make sure they kids have the highest security settings, and talk about the dangers of adding strangers - I know the kids here are fearless when it comes to walking up to a strange foreigner and saying "hello". I would hate to see that attitude carry over to the internet.

Thanks for the idea!  It inspired me to make my own Facebook lesson, using "The Social Network" trailer as a warmup.  I also go into slightly more detail about what you can do with Facebook.  The main task is for students to create a profile (on paper) for their friend, including a profile pic.  It's not field tested, so I won't share it until then - just in case.  I plan on using it next semester.

One other idea is to compare Cyworld and Facebook.

I tried something similar about 2 years ago. I encountered a major problem. At the time, (and probably still) Facebook required your email address to set up an account. Most students had Hanmail, Naver, or other typically Korean Email accounts, and for some reason, at the time, (I dunno if it's still the case,) facebook never recognised those email accounts, and wouldn't set up a facebook account with them. So I'd first check that out.

Here is a lesson I made using Facebook as a theme.

I did it with High School students, but would also work with some middle school classes.

Time: 40 minutes

Here is a rough lesson plan:

1 - Present Facebook powerpoint to the class. Show them examples of profiles and explain what Facebook is. Show them   the blank FB profile worksheet.

2 - Hand out the FB profile worksheet (one A5 copy for each student)

3 - Have students fill in the page with their own information.

4 - When students have finished, show them the Create a Club powerpoint.

5 - Show them the very basic example of 'The Eating Club'.

6 - Divide students into groups of 4. They should create a club based on something that they all enjoy.

7 - Have the students make a poster on the back of one of the Facebook worksheets (This can be extended with bigger pages, crayons etc)

8 - Have students stand and present their Clubs to the class.

Any feedback would be much appreciated!  :)

This looks like a great idea.
My middle school students are obsessed with trying to stalk my Facebook so I'm sure they'd be interested in this!

This looks interesting. I'm thinking it may not fill all the time though but will give it a whirl to see what happens. May try adding in some kind of listening gap fill. i.e. http://www.breakingnewsenglish.com/0711/071108-facebook_myspace.html

This is great thank you, but do you fit all that into one lesson? I may spread it over 2 lessons just to let them be creative for a while longer. Thanks again.
when in Rome.. Die eind resultaat moet die moeite werd wees!

Hi Morne - yes I fitted it into a 40 lesson.

But I wasn't able to give the students much feedback on their FB pages. So you could extend it to two lessons and sure it would work well.

Thanks I used your idea this week and it worked really well! They came up with some crazy clubs! I didn't have time for them to present their clubs this week though, so am also spreading it over 2 weeks.

I can't wait to try this out.  I think my advanced students will really like this.
